The Gun Owners of America spokesman explains why the state’s police departments could face a real struggle if Measure 114 were to pass.
Ever since late October, Oregon has been trying to push Measure 114, a law that would ban the sale of magazines holding more than 10 rounds, and require a permit for any sort of gun purchase. But little did it realize just how much it could hamper its own police force.
Speaking with Fox News, several officers made it clear that they could face great difficulty should the measure pass. It would not only limit their ability to purchase new firearms, but also prevent off-duty officers from carrying – something that could stop them from protecting others during a criminal activity.
“It’s not clear how existing certified public safety professionals are treated under this ballot measure,” Eugene Police Chief Chris Skinner noted. “Both the purchase of weapons and the possession of magazines in excess of 10 rounds, which all of our duty weapons have that.”
That said, the Measure hasn’t passed at the moment, as a judge was able to block it, thanks to assistance from the Gun Owners of America. But while Oregon tries to find a way around this block, we’ve got Stephen Willeford, a spokesman for the group, joining us. You may recall in 2017 how he stopped the Sutherland Springs, Texas mass shooting, acting as the “good guy with a gun.” His expertise is certainly welcome in this matter
Q&A:
- First, let’s talk about how the Measure 114 could prevent off-duty police officers from carrying firearms with them. How troublesome could this be when it comes to any sort of criminal encounters they come across?
- For that matter, how much of a hassle could it become for officers to purchase new firearms or higher-count magazines, should the situation call for it? Could they possibly have to travel out of state?
- The capital of Oregon, Portland, is already facing a major increase in crime due to depleted police forces. Should this Measure pass, could it possibly make matters worse in 2023?
- Several critics feel that passing the gun law will lead to more violence. Do you believe Oregon should consider some form of Constitutional-Carry law instead?
- Speaking of Constitutional-Carry, you’ve been a long-time advocate for it, compared to the “assault weapons” ban that President Biden is pushing for. Why do you think it would be more effective?
- Where can we learn more about you, as well as the Gun Owners of America?
