A Second Amendment representative explains why the new law could be bad news for gun owners in Oregon.
Back in November, Oregon voters approved Measure 114, a law that would ban the manufacturing, purchase or sale of magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds of ammunition within the state. In addition, it would also have a requirement for citizens looking to purchase a gun to go through a safety course, as well as pass a background check.
The vote was a close one – it passed by 50.6 percent – but it was a measure introduced by the state in the hopes of quelling gun violence. However, many private gun owners and pro-gun advocates have noted that it goes against the Constitutional right to bear arms.
Harney County Circuit Court Judge Robert Raschio agreed with this, putting a temporary restraining order on the Measure and asking for a more in-depth hearing next week.
There’s a lot on the line here, as the passage of such a law could violate the rights of thousands of gun owners within the state. With us now to discuss this further is a representative of the Second Amendment Foundation, a group that believes in the right for every citizen to bear arms. Their perspective should be rather helpful with this subject.
Q&A:
- Why do you think Oregon is so hellbent on passing a law that would ban the manufacturing and sales of larger magazines within the state? Do they sincerely believe this will slow down gun violence within the state?
- Tell us how this would specifically hurt the rights of private gun owners that live in Oregon.
- If this law does end up passing, could President Joe Biden use it for further motivation in his quest to ban all “assault weapons” sales within the United States?
- For the longest time, the Second Amendment Foundation has proclaimed that Constitutional (or Concealed) Carry would be a far more effective solution to stopping active shooters than banning the sales of particular weapons and accessories. Why do you feel this is the case?
- If Oregon does end up passing its law, could other states try to follow suit instead of looking at other solutions?
- Where can we learn more about the Second Amendment Foundation and its members?
