This week Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas confirmed that his agency is in talks to divert resources from Veteran’s Affairs to care for illegal immigrants. Specifically, doctors and nurses in the VA would be siphoned off to care for immigrants illegally crossing the US’s southern border.
Mayorkas confirmed this news during his testimony this week before the House Appropriations Committee.
What are the implications of taking resources away from the VA and reallocating them to deal with the border crisis? Today some veterans cannot even receive the care they have been promised. Taking away these services would cripple the agency and hurt our veterans. More importantly, it sends the wrong message to Americans. Help illegal immigrants breaking our laws but it is ok to ignore our vets.
Why is the Department of Homeland Security proposing this idea? The Biden Administration is worried about further chaos at the border once Title 42 expires on May 24th. Thus far it has offered no real plan to deal with the border situation, so it is trying to borrow resources from other agencies.
Was this something Congress was aware of as a possible solution to fix the border? No, initially Congress was not aware of this idea. It was brought to light by members of the appropriations committee who questioned Secretary Mayorkas about the proposal. After skirting the question on two occasions he admitted that DHS was in talks to reallocate VA resources.
How will veterans react to this news? For the moment very few veterans know of Mayorkas’s plan. However, once they learn about it they will be furious. I work with vets in my state and some cannot even get appointments for needed medical treatment. The idea that illegal immigrants will get treated and take priority over vets is appalling.
