OPINION
Shortly before Thanksgiving, U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Matthew Graves announced the conviction of Paula “Paulette” Harlow for a “federal conspiracy against rights” and Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act violation for participating in a peaceful protest at a late-term abortion clinic in 2020.
Harlow is a 75-year-old woman who caused no damage while expressing her First Amendment Right to freedom of speech. And while the Dobbs case overturning Roe held that the right to abortion cannot be construed from the Constitution of the United States, somehow Harlow was convicted of a conspiracy against rights in U.S. District Court.
The judgment against Harlow is not so much against her as much as it is against an activist judge and compromised justice system.
According to Graves, Harlow and eight others “conspired to prevent fellow citizens from exercising their rights to receive and to provide reproductive health care.” They face up to 11 years in prison and $250,000 in fines.
Oddly, the Biden Justice Department praised this conviction despite the Supreme Court’s Dobbs ruling.
Sadly, the prosecution of peaceful protesters is often not news in the current political climate.
When roughly 200 pro-Palestinian activists violently rioted at the Democratic National Committee (DNC) headquarters and injured six Capitol Police officers around the same time, U.S AG Graves was as silent as his namesake. He has not condemned the actions or announced prosecution of anyone associated with the riot, which is weeks — not years old — like Paulette’s.
Where is equal justice? Where is the common sense when a three-year-old peaceful incident draws more ire from the Justice Department than a recent riot that injured six police officers?
“President Biden and his administration have been merciless in their efforts to punish pro-life Americans,” CatholicVote President Brian Burch told Fox News Digital, adding, “He is doing lasting damage to the trust and integrity of a critical part of government.”
Now, to give credit where credit is due, the federal government did finally convict a pro-abortion Ph.D. bioengineer that firebombed an anti-abortion group in Wisconsin. But lest we get too excited about the alleged even-handedness of the DOJ, it is worth pointing out that federal prosecutors suggested the U.S. District Court judge give a lighter sentence for a lighter crime while paying for the defense attorney’s fees through a federal judiciary grant.
And consider what this man had to do before the government convicted a pro-abortion terrorist. Hridindu Sankar Roychowdhury pleaded guilty to vandalizing and setting fire in the Madison offices of Wisconsin Family Action in spring of 2022. “If abortions aren’t safe then you aren’t either” was the threat he allegedly painted on the outside wall, along with the “anarchy” symbol and an anti-police slogan.
A grand jury indicted Roychowdhury on one count of attempting to cause damage by means of fire or an explosive. His expensive private attorney paid for by we the taxpayers originally had him plead not guilty, arguing that the federal arson statute under which he was charged was unconstitutional.
However, knowing there was not a jury in the world that would find him innocent, he reached a plea deal with the federal prosecutors recommending a light sentence, simply because he admitted to the terrorist act.
Although Harlow has yet to be sentenced, do you think the federal prosecutors in the Biden administration are looking to make a plea deal for a light sentence with her? Is the federal government paying for her private attorney’s fees? She is facing 11 years in a federal penitentiary and $250,000 in fines after being tried in what appears to be a kangaroo court.
If she is locked away the first act of the next president should be to pardon every single peaceful anti-abortion protester U.S. District Court Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly sent away for exercising her right to speak … on behalf of the voiceless.
If Harlow receives a sentence harsher than pro-abortion, terrorist, firebomber Roychowdhury’s, it will further serve to cement the fact that the Department of Justice under the Biden administration is using the justice system to enforce their political agenda rather than the law.
Beyond that, if Harlow receives any sentence at all while zero of the pro-Palestinian rioters in the same city are charged, she will become a symbol for the joke that has become of America’s so-called justice system.
Burch pointed out the difference, saying, “It is one thing to hold an alternative view on abortion. It is entirely different when the president of the United States turns our independent law enforcement agencies into a pro-abortion police force.”
