New York’s New Gun Law Borderlines On the Ridiculous, Says Group (Guest: Second Amendment)

Following the overturning of a more than 100-year old gun law in New York, the state has responded with a new law that presents some new restrictions on where the weapon can be carried.

According to various reports, the law will not allow any kind of firearms on all private property unless the owner makes it abundantly clear that they’re allowed, mainly through signs. That flips around what the law used to be, where people that utilized concealed carry were able to bring a weapon onto private property unless the owner had forbidden it.

In addition, the law also states that various public places are now to be gun free, including churches, bars, restaurants with any kind of alcohol, public parks, government buildings, colleges, and public gathering spots. In essence, those that practice concealed-carry will now basically be allowed to have their weapon on public walks or in their own home.

To discuss this in further detail, we’ve invited a spokesperson from the 2nd Amendment Foundation to provide their perspective, and why New York might be going too far with this new law.

Q&A:

  1. What does New York’s strict new gun law say to those that practice concealed-carry, or merely carry a gun in an effort to keep others safe?
  2. Do you believe New York may be overreacting to the Supreme Court’s decision to cut down their previous gun law, which stood for over 100 years?
  3. What sort of backlash do you foresee from New York’s law? Could this hamper the ability to stop active shooter events in the future, as we recently saw in other states?
  4. Do you think other states may try to adopt similar gun rules in the hopes of curbing violence? Or will it really depend on state-by-state?
  5. What advice would you have to private gun owners or those that utilize concealed-carry in the state of New York?
  6. Where can we learn more about the Second Amendment Foundation and its members?
  7. Those interested can visit http://www.saf.org/.
