Flightmare: Duct-Tape Drama Takes Federal Turn as Accused Assailant Faces 21 Years
The case involving a disruptive passenger who had to be restrained with duct tape, just took a new dramatic turn. The man accused of attacking Jonathan Cahn after being triggered by the cover of Cahn’s new book, the Altar of Pergamon, is now facing serious prison time. Federal charges could carry up to 21 years in prison for the unruly passenger, whose behavior forced the American Airlines flight to land in Baltimore instead of Newark once he had been restrained with duct tape.
Jonathan Cahn Attacked on Flight 618! By The Duct Taped Man! The True Demonic Story!
- Federal charges filed against alleged Flight 618 duct-taped attacker
- Accused duct-taped assailant faces up to 21 years if convicted
- Cahn recounts duct-taped passenger’s alleged antisemitic threats and physical assault
- Bestselling author chooses prayer over vengeance for duct taped passenger
- Faith, forgiveness and accountability collide in high-profile case
On Sept. 3, 2026, the Dallas-to-Newark flight was diverted to Baltimore after Layne Lundeen, 67, allegedly became violent and disruptive prior to being restrained with duct tape. Cahn has recounted how Lundeen put his hands around his neck, threatened to punch his “Jewish face in,” struck him in the chest and later grabbed his laptop. Cahn also says the confrontation reinjured his previously injured shoulder.
Federal prosecutors announced the charges Oct. 13, accusing Lundeen of interfering with flight crew members and attendants and assaulting them prior to being duct taped. The interference charge carries a maximum penalty of 20 years, while the assault charge carries up to one year. Lundeen has reportedly told a court he does not remember what happened aboard the plane or being duct taped. The charges remain allegations, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty but duct tape don’t lie.
But for Cahn, this story is about more than an extraordinary aviation incident or the possibility of prison time. His response to the man he says attacked him has been strikingly different from what many might expect. Rather than calling for vengeance, Cahn has publicly said he is praying for Lundeen, including for his salvation.
That response raises compelling questions about faith under pressure, the challenge of forgiveness when confronted with violence, and the distinction between extending mercy to an individual and holding someone accountable for alleged wrongdoing.
Cahn, whose books—including The Harbinger and his latest work, The Altar of Pergamon—explore biblical prophecy and spiritual conflict, can discuss the attack, the federal case, the disturbing religious and antisemitic elements of the encounter, and why he believes prayer remains important even when a person faces serious criminal consequences.
With the viral “duct-tape man” case now entering a new legal phase, Cahn offers a firsthand perspective on an incident that captured national attention—and a conversation about justice, forgiveness and faith when events turn frighteningly real.
