Microsoft Believes That Chinese Hackers Have Somehow Infiltrated U.S. Infrastructure (Guest: Nan Su)

The Epoch Times’ Nan Su explains how the reported actions of “Volt Typhoon” could be more problematic down the road.

At a time when China and the United States seem to be at each other’s throats, Microsoft has noted how the former could have a technical advantage over the latter.

A new report from CNBC reveals that, according to tech giant Microsoft, a group of hackers sponsored by China have apparently compromised “critical” cyber infrastructure within the United States, built solely for the purpose of gathering intelligence.

The group, known under the code name “Volt Typhoon,” have been operating over the past couple of years, disrupting “critical communications infrastructure between the United States and Asia,” according to the company.

With that, the National Security Agency has already put out a bulletin; and Microsoft has already served notice to the affected companies. That said, however, the attacks appear to be ongoing.

A spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs have dismissed this report as “filled with disinformation,” noting that the U.S. “is the champion of hacking.” But could the country be misleading on purpose as it attempts to build up resistance against the United States?

Joining us now to discuss the matter further is Nan Su, an investigative reporter for the Epoch Times. His expertise in all things China should be helpful in this matter.

Q&A:

  1. How critical a matter do you believe it is that China could be hacking U.S. infrastructure in an effort to get information about its adversaries for a potential future attack?
  2. Microsoft seems to know a thing or two about technology, so how do you think it noticed the damage that “Volt Typhoon” was doing to the U.S. infrastructure?
  3. It has gotten to the point where the National Security Agency has gotten involved, and this could provide a new wrinkle by the ongoing investigation from the Judiciary Committee. Do you believe things could get worse as the summer goes on?
  4. Is there any potential solution to this problem? Any sort of anti-hacking tools that could be introduced to stop China’s infiltration?
  5. There are reports that, if things don’t simmer down between the U.S. and China soon, that a potential war could break out. Do you see this potentially happening, or do you believe cooler heads will prevail?
  6. Speaking of what’s going on with China, you recently contributed to a new Epoch Times documentary called The Final WarTell us more about it and why it’s such a compelling subject with everything that’s happening right now.
  7. Where can we learn more about you and see your work over on The Epoch Times?
