The law enforcement veteran discusses his recent report, in which he discussed the increase of violent attacks on police officers.
These days, police officers know they face more risk than ever before.
This is mostly due to a lack of support by most of their city governments, who have slashed their funding in the wake of the “defund the police” protests; as well as some citizens who still believe that unruly behavior is the order of the day.
As a result, more of these officers are facing violence – and even getting shot. Law Enforcement Today recently spoke to InVest USA founder and police veteran Michael Letts about a disturbing new report about how these incidents are on the rise.
Per numbers provided by the National Fraternal Order of Police, more officers have been shot in the first half of 2024 than all of 2023 – and that previous number had set a record in terms of shooting incidents.
“People in America are not safe, they feel the effect of violent crimes, and the law enforcement community feels it,” Letts noted in his interview.
He continued, “When the mainstream media presents that law enforcement officers are bad, which is what they’re doing, when they say you’re automatically guilty until innocent, then the general society and especially the criminal society say, ‘Look, I’m actually doing a society a favor by taking out a cop’. So of course you’re going to see the numbers continue to escalate and go higher.”
While Letts did note there was hope with Senator Thom Tillis’ proposed Protect and Serve Act, it’s still a steep hill to climb – especially with President Joe Biden making little headway in actually helping out police officers.
Letts joins us now to discuss the report. Welcome, Michael!
Q&A:
- What are your thoughts on the numbers provided by the National Fraternal Order of Police, which show that more officers have been shot in the first half of 2024 than in all of 2023?
- Is it disturbing to see this kind of rise in attacks on police officers? Even in the face of the “defund the police” protests?

- Do you believe there’s a reason that Biden and his administration have done very little to restore funding to police departments, despite his previous promise to do so?
- You’re the creator of InVest USA, an organization that provides bulletproof vests to police officers through various charitable groups and sponsorships. Tell us more about that, and why support for fellow officers is so important right now.
