Maryland’s Gun Safety Act of 2023 Is a Huge Problem For Constitutional-Carry Citizens (Guest: Stephen Willeford)

The “Hero with a Gun” explains why the state’s focus should be on supporting Concealed-Carry instead.

Late last week, Maryland became the latest state to implement stricter gun laws in an effort to slow the rising number of “active shooter” events. However, some advocates believe they may be too strict for its own good.

The state, under Senate President Bill Ferguson, recently implemented the Gun Safety Act of 2023. With it, it would prohibit those carrying Concealed-Carry citizens, even with permits, from being within 100 feet of any public place. This includes, according to the bill, “schools, hospitals, libraries, synagogues, churches, mosques. Also parks, restaurants, anywhere the public is gathering.”

Though private citizens would still be able to own firearms and keep them within their homes, this does put a hamper on Concealed-Carry citizens, who carry their weapons in an effort to thwart would-be “active shooters” and other criminals – officially licensed to do so, too.

Several Republican lawmakers objected to the bill. Speaking with WBAL TV, Senate Minority Leader Stephen Hershey explained, “I think we are a safer society if people have the ability to protect themselves. If you look at celebrities and heads of state, they have people that are armed, people that are able to protect them. Why should we, all of a sudden, limit ourselves?”

With us now to discuss this point further – and what Maryland can do to replace this bill – is Stephen Willeford, the spokesperson for Gun Owners of America. You may recall in 2017 how he stopped the Sutherland Springs, Texas mass shooting, acting as the “good guy with a gun.” His expertise is welcome in this matter.

Q&A:

  1. For the longest time you’ve been suggesting Concealed-Carry as a proper solution to the “active shooter” events that have taken place as of late. What, in your mind, makes it an effective solution?
  2. Is Maryland thinking clearly when it comes to these restrictive gun laws? For instance, what’s to happen if an “active shooter” event takes place and a Concealed-Carry citizen isn’t able to stop it?
  3. What do you think Maryland should be doing instead when it comes to its gun laws? Or should it even have them to begin with?
  4. As 2023 rolls on, will we possibly see more states adapt to Concealed-Carry rules? Or will it possibly go the other way around?
  5. Tell us more about your “hero with a gun” incident in 2017, and how that relates to how Concealed-Carry citizens can stop “active shooters” in this day and age.
  6. Where can we learn more about you, as well as the Gun Owners of America?
