Intro: Kristin Cavallari of the popular series ‘Very Cavallari’ accused her husband Jay Cutler of conducting “Marital Misconduct.”

What exactly is marital misconduct?

Here to help answer this question and more is marriage expert Mort Fertel.

Q&A:

  1. Welcome Mort, so what exactly is marital misconduct?

Answer: Marital misconduct is conduct that hurts your marriage. It’s that simple. And there are 2 types of marital misconduct.

  1. What are those 2 types?

Answer: 1) Actions that your spouse does not like and does not want you to do. It’s important to be sensitive to our spouse’s feelings and not do things that would hurt them. That’s one of the most important qualities in a successful marriage—sensitivity, which is the ability to change your behavior to accommodate your spouse’s feelings 2) Actions that aren’t good for marriage, whether your spouse likes them or not. Mutual consent does NOT determine the truth. Just because 2 people agree to something doesn’t mean it won’t hurt their relationship. I’ll give you 2 example. Let’s say a couple agrees that one person will take a job overseas for 6 months or a job that requires excessive traveling. They might agree to it, but that separation is bound to hurt their marriage. Another example, although extreme, would be an open marriage. It never works, even if husband and wife agree to it.

  1. What is your advice for Kristin Cavallari and Jay Cutler, who have been married nearly 7 years?

Answer: make a herculean effort to save your marriage before you call it quits, no matter what mistakes may have been made in the past. The future of a marriage is not determined by past behavior; it’s determined by future behavior. People can change. And so can marriages.

  1. What can we learn from this failing marriage so that we don’t end up in one?

Love is a skill. Learn it! Usually people think their mistake was marrying the wrong person. But in most cases the mistake is not who you married; it’s how you love. You see, THE KEY TO SUCCEEDING IN MARRIAGE IS NOT FINDING THE RIGHT PERSON; IT’S LEARNING TO LOVE THE PERSON YOU FOUND. Real lasting love is not something you find. It never just happens. And there’s nothing natural about it. You have to “make love” day in and day out. You have to nurture it. It takes time, effort, and energy. And most importantly, it takes WISDOM. You have to know WHAT TO DO TO make the marriage work. Isn’t that true of everything? Knowledge + practice = success. It’s no different in marriage. Make no mistake about it, love is NOT a mystery. You don’t have to be lucky in love. You have to be smart. There are specific things you can do that breed intimacy and connection. And other things you shouldn’t do that will destroy any relationship.
