The spokesman for the Gun Owners of America explains why Congress’ response to the group’s lawsuit could finally tear down the controversial rule for good.
The National Firearms Act (NFA) has been on its last legs for several months now. And come later this week, it could finally come crashing down, much to the delight of millions of private gun owners.
Originally put in place in 1934, the National Firearms Act originally called for an excise tax on the manufacture and transfer of certain firearms while also mandating the registration of said firearms. A National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record (the NFA Registry for short) was put in place to assure that owners were being kept track of.
As you might guess, gun owners were not a fan of that. In addition, gun groups had been promising huge legal action against it. The Gun Owners of America (GOA), for instance, have been making huge progress with their “one big beautiful lawsuit,” in response to Donald Trump’s “big beautiful bill” months back.
Since then, Congress eliminated the $200 tax, though the Department of Justice still believes it’s a necessity. However, the lawsuit states that the department must respond to the lawsuit by the end of this week – and all eyes on what it will do next.
Stephen Willeford, the 2017 “hero with a gun” who serves as spokesman for the group, joins us now to discuss the importance of fighting back against the NFA, and what could happen with the Department of Justice’s response. We welcome him to the show!
