It Appears China Is Resorting To Using Spy Balloons Yet Again, This Time Over Taiwan

The Epoch Times’ senior investigative reporter Nan Su discusses the latest actions by the country – and the return of said balloons.

Just about a year to the day of the appearance of spy balloons over U.S. soil, it appears that China has them once again peeking in on the actions of a nearby military base – this time in Taiwan.

Taiwan’s Defense Ministry recently reported that the country had sent over four balloons across the island, including three that came dangerously close to one of its Air Force bases. This is the latest move by China in an effort to try and assume form of control over Taiwan, though, based on history, it has no governance over it.

Three of the balloons came within range of the Ching-Chuan-Kang air base, which is used by a majority of the Taiwanese air military force. Meanwhile, a fourth lingered over the port of Keelung, which serves as a nearby station for trade relations with Japan.

Though China has yet to respond to the matter, it’s clear that they’re not going away when it comes to its efforts to intimidate the island – especially with president and legislature elections set to take place next week.

Joining us now to discuss the matter further is Nan Su, a senior investigative reporter for The Epoch Times. Nan is a specialist in all things China, so his expertise will certainly be useful in this matter. We welcome him to the show.

Q&A:

  1. Why does China use spy balloons instead of more traditional spying vehicles? Are they wearing their arrogance on their sleeve in showing they’re spying on countries? Or is it a cost-based situation? Perhaps both?
  2. How big a deal is it that China has now been caught spying on both the U.S. and Taiwan with these balloons? Could other countries potentially be targeted for these balloons?
  3. It appears the balloons were targeting a military base, but there was also one keeping a close eye on trade relations with Japan. Could it be trying to keep track of Taiwanese supply, or perhaps find a way to usurp it in the South China Sea? If not, what do you think it’s up to?
  4. We’ve seen China set up shop in a number of countries in an effort to keep control over its people, and try to intimidate others. Are Xi Jinping and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) going too far with its actions?
  5. There’s talk that China could very well engage in a war against Taiwan and the United States as early as next year, with Russia as a potential ally. What is the probability of this happening, you think?
  6. Speaking of uneasiness with China, you recently contributed to a new Epoch Times documentary called The Final WarTell us more about it and why it’s such a compelling subject with everything that’s happening right now.
  7. Where can we learn more about you and see your work over on The Epoch Times?
