Israelis Have Taken To “Disruption and Resistance” In an Effort To Stop the Country’s Overhaul of the Judicial System

Former Mayor of Shiloh David Rubin discusses the actions by the rioters, and how they may have a surprise supporter in the United States.

Things have already been uneasy in Israel as of late, between attacks that have left many dead and uneasiness with its politics. Now, tens of thousands of demonstrators have recently taken action, protesting with “disruption and resistance” against the overhaul of its judicial system.

Protestors took to many cities, including Haifa, Petach Tikva, Beer Sheva, as well as Ben-Gurion International Airport, to protest the recent decision by lawmakers to strip the Supreme Court of the power to declare government action “unreasonable,” giving them leeway to changing the judicial system to something they feel is more balanced.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his allies believe what they call “reforms” will be for the better of Israel – but many of its citizens don’t feel the same way. Not to mention those that claim that such a move could turn Israel into a dictatorship. But is that the case?

Joining us now to discuss this further is David Rubin, the former Mayor of Shiloh in the West Bank, Israel. Mayor Rubin, a respected leader in the region, has been actively working towards peace and security for his community. In light of recent events, including the counterterrorism efforts in the city of Jenin, where Israeli forces targeted militant fighters, it is crucial to gain Mayor Rubin’s perspective on the challenges faced and the path to stability. His expertise will be quite useful in this matter.

Q&A:

  1. What are your thoughts on the protestors spreading “disruption and resistance” across the city?
  2. What about the naysayers that believe that Netanyahu could be creating what some call a “dictatorship” with this justice system overhaul? Do you believe their comments are farfetched?
  3. At this point, what do you think it would take for Israel to find peace? Or is it even possible?
  4. You believe that President Joe Biden is supporting these protestors, given his previous comments about Netanyahu’s government being “extreme.” Are you surprised by said support, or does it seem about right with his way of thinking?
  5. Do you believe there’s a reason Biden hasn’t invited Netanyahu to the White House to discuss what’s happening further in Israel?
  6. You are the founder of a humanitarian organization to help victims of terrorism. Tell us about that.
  7. Where we may learn more about Mayor Rubin’s work with Shiloh Israel Children?
