Is telemedicine safer than going to a doctor’s office?

Intro: There’s an emerging term being heard in medical circles that is becoming the new normal in the Covid-19 era: TeleMedicine, and it’s on the rise.

Joining us in this the discussion to help us learn more about this rising trend is Medical Futurist Dr. Dan O’Brien, MD. Welcome Dr. Dan.

Q&A:

1. Question: Dr. Dan, is telemedicine safer than going to the doctor’s office and if so, why?

Answer: Telemedicine is generally safer and we have seen an increase in its usage because of COVID-19 and by using telemedicine for follow up or routine visits it makes sense to utilize this newer technology.

2. Question:  Dr. Dan, does telemedicine improve access to care?

Answer: Absolutely telemedicine improves access to care especially in rural areas where access is limited.  Patients do not have to travel to bigger cities to see their healthcare specialist, but rather they can log onto their tablet and get virtual care.

3. Question: Dr. Dan, does telemedicine keep patients safer since they don’t have to visit the doctor’s office and potentially come in contact with COVID?

Answer: Yes, telemedicine allows sick/immunocompromised patients to stay at home and not get exposed to COVID while being at the doctor’s office.

4. Question: Dr. Dan since you’re a Medical Futurist, do you think virtual clinics are the future?

Answer: Yes, digital health and virtual clinics are the future of medicine. It will improve the quality and access to care.

5. Question: You have a news book, “Camel Resilience.” Tell us about your book.

Answer: My book talks about perpetually adapting and having the resilience to overcome challenges in life. Telemedicine at first was a challenging healthcare technology that did not seem possible, but with medical professionals adapting because of COVID, telemedicine is here to stay and is the future of medicine.

6. Dr. Dan, where may we buy your book, telemedicine or your work?

Answer: The book is available on Amazon.com and my website is: drdanmd.com
