Is Hong Kong Risking Political Persecution By Going After a Democracy Activist?

The Epoch Times’ investigative reporter Nan Su explains why the actions against Jimmy Lai could come back to haunt the Chinese Communist Party.

It appears that the Chinese Communist Party could run into huge outcry as it attempts to prosecute democracy activist Jimmy Lai.

Per this report from The Epoch Times, Lai is currently on trial in Hong Kong. The founder of the formerly published Apple Daily has been accused by the CCP of “collusion” with foreign forces under a draconian national security law, put into effect by them back in 2020. In addition, they also accuse him of taking part in a conspiracy to publish “seditious” publications under a British colonial-era sedition law.

The move has been criticized by many, with numerous calls for the release of the 76-year old activist.

He’s the latest of many figures that have put their freedom in jeopardy over criticism against the CCP – in fact, over 1,760 political prisoners in the former British colony have faced said charges.

Though the argument continues over his case, many are wondering if the Chinese Communist Party may have taken their strict enforcement too far in this case.

Joining us now to discuss this is Nan Su, a senior investigative reporter for The Epoch Times. His expertise in all things China should be helpful in this conversation.
