UNwelcome: President of Iran to Face Fury as Iranian Americans set to Descend on United Nations with Trump Watching
Ambassador Carla Sands and former U.S. Senator Sam Brownback will be among the prominent American dignitaries joining thousands of Iranians in New York this month to stand against the Iranian regime’s escalating human rights abuses and nuclear provocations.
This amounts to a showdown on American soil between the people of Iran who demand regime change there, the President of Iran, and the President of the United States, Donald Trump. At the upcoming U.N. General Assembly (UNGA), Trump is expected to speak on Tuesday, September 23rd. The president of the repressive regime of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian, is speaking the next day.
The gathering, coinciding with the opening of the United Nations General Assembly, is set for September 23 at Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza and is being organized by the Organization of Iranian American Communities (OIAC) and the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI).
The National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) has been calling for regime change in Iran and is available to provide context on this huge development. Deputy Director Alireza Jafarzadeh, Member of Parliament in Exile Shahin Gobadi, and others are available for interviews.
The rally comes at a time of unprecedented repression inside Iran. In the first year of Masoud Pezeshkian’s administration, slated to represent the regime before the UN, more than 1,670 executions have already been recorded. The regime has admitted to arresting more than 21,000 citizens for political activity in recent months, while accelerating its nuclear program and brutally silencing dissent. State media itself has warned of a looming repeat of the 1988 massacre, when over 30,000 political prisoners were executed in a matter of months—a crime that the UN Special Rapporteur on Iran has since described as “genocide” and a “crime against humanity.”
For the Iranian people, the message could not be clearer: the regime’s survival strategy rests on executions at home and nuclear blackmail abroad. In response, Iranians across the United States will converge on New York, representing more than 40 states, to say “no” to appeasement and “yes” to the democratic alternative presented by NCRI President-elect Maryam Rajavi. Her “Third Option”—regime change by the Iranian people and their organized Resistance—has gained momentum not only among Iranians but also with policymakers across Europe and the United States.
In recent weeks, tens of thousands rallied in Brussels with the same message, urging the international community to act decisively. The foreign ministers of France, Germany, and the UK have already activated the JCPOA’s snapback mechanism, calling for reinstatement of UN Security Council resolutions and sanctions that were lifted under the 2015 nuclear deal. Demonstrators in New York will press the United Nations and world powers to enforce those resolutions immediately and to recognize the Iranian people’s right to overthrow the ruling theocracy.
For interviews, senior NCRI officials Alireza Jafarzadeh, Shahin Gobadi, and Ali Safavi will be available to provide analysis on the regime’s escalating brutality, its nuclear deception, and why supporting the Iranian people’s struggle for freedom is the only path to peace and stability.
