After Israel Takes Out Hamas and Hezbollah Leadership, Trump Hands Iran’s Houthi Leaders a Hot Potato
In the wake of the October 7th attacks in 2023, Israel used precision air strikes to take out Hamas leadership. It then did the same to the Iran-backed Hezbollah leaders. Now, the U.S. policy under President Donald Trump is targeting the Iran-backed Houthi leadership on the Saudi Peninsula’s southwestern corner, in Yemen.
This past weekend, U.S. airstrikes took out multiple Houthi leaders.
As proxies of Iran, the Houthis have benefited from four years of a Biden administration policy that gave them ballistic missiles. The Houthis then used those missiles and other strategic weapons to target commercial vessels, causing them to travel via alternate routes. Of course, this resulted in supply chain disruptions and rising prices.
The Trump policy of targeting the Houthis isn’t just about retaliation for targeting commercial ships. It’s also part of the fight with Iran. As the Iranian mullahs’ grip on tyrannical power continues to weaken and face collapse, the Trump policy is also weakening the regime on another front – in Yemen.
Alireza Jafarzadeh is the Deputy Director of the Washington, DC office of the National Council of the Resistance of Iran (NCRI), a group that seeks the removal of Iran’s mullahs. The NCRI even has its own candidate for president once the Mullahs are removed – Maryam Rajavi.
