Experts on DOJ / Comey Indictment

Crossfire Immunity: Five Years Too Late for Justice but Just in time For Irony

The indictment of former FBI Director James Comey has sparked a political firestorm—but the real scandal may be what’s not in the indictment.

Choose from any three of these experts for an interview on your show: Former U.S. Congressman Jim Renacci (R-OH), former Margaret Thatcher speechwriter Geoffrey Gilson, or CompassCare CEO and target of DOJ persecution.

Comey is finally being held accountable, but for the least consequential of his alleged offenses—false statements tied to his 2020 Senate testimony. In many respects, the horse is already out of the barn. The most explosive and damning charges—those connected to his role in the Crossfire Hurricane investigation—will never see a courtroom. The statutes of limitations on crimes related to that 2016–2017 domestic spying operation expired years ago.

Weak charges on Indictment

If ever there was political weaponization of the Justice Department, that was it. Crossfire Hurricane wasn’t just bad judgment—it was the abuse of federal intelligence powers against a presidential candidate and later, a sitting president. Yet the details of that operation have faded from the headlines, much to the benefit of Trump’s opponents, who now point to the Comey indictment as “proof” of political targeting. The irony is staggering. The same people who orchestrated the original weaponization are now claiming to be its victims.

Former Margaret Thatcher speechwriter Geoff Gilson believes Comey is “reaping what he sowed,” noting that the seeds of his downfall were planted long before this indictment. Gilson recalls Comey’s stunning decision days before the 2016 election to publicly list Hillary Clinton’s crimes—only to then announce he would not prosecute her. “It was political theatre masquerading as law enforcement,” says Gilson. “He played politics with justice—and justice is now playing politics with him.”

Former U.S. Congressman Jim Renacci, who has been outspoken about bureaucratic overreach, agrees that Comey’s indictment represents a missed opportunity. “This is a sideshow,” Renacci notes. “The real abuse was when Comey and others turned federal law enforcement into a political weapon against their own government. That’s when trust in the DOJ truly began to erode.”

Jim Harden, a DOJ target himself, sees a pattern. He’s faced prosecution for “crimes that don’t even exist”—a testament, he says, to how the system can invent enemies when it wants to. “The Comey indictment is symbolic,” Harden explains. “It reminds us who gets punished and who doesn’t. The real crimes go uncharged when they implicate the powerful.”

Adding to the intrigue are allegations never pursued—among them, an alleged threat against Donald Trump embedded in one of Comey’s symbolic gestures after leaving office. Those allegations remain untested, but their mere existence underscores how politicized the DOJ has become.

The broader message: America’s justice system is no longer blind. It’s partisan, selective, and in desperate need of reform—because as this indictment shows, justice delayed isn’t just justice denied; it’s justice diminished.

OPTIONAL Q&A:

  1. Why are the most serious potential charges against James Comey—those stemming from Crossfire Hurricane—absent from this indictment?
  2. ow much of that omission is due to the expiration of key statutes of limitation, effectively shielding Comey from accountability for 2016–2017 actions?
  3. oes the focus on false statements in 2020 feel like a deliberate distraction from the deeper abuses of power that occurred under his watch?
  4. How can Comey’s indictment be called “political weaponization” when Crossfire Hurricane itself was the original act of weaponizing the DOJ?
  5. What message does this selective prosecution send to Americans who have lost faith in the fairness of the justice system?
  6. Is the media’s narrow framing of this case—focusing on Comey’s technical false statements—an intentional effort to bury the broader Crossfire Hurricane scandal?
  7. Given your own experience with political targeting, how does this case reflect the broader culture of impunity inside federal law enforcement?
  8. What reforms would each of you propose to ensure that future DOJ officials can never again use intelligence and prosecutorial powers as political weapons?

ABOUT JIM RENACCI…

In 2010, Jim filed to run for U.S. Congress in Ohio’s 16th Congressional District, taking on a well-funded Democratic incumbent. Jim won the election by 9 percent.

While in Congress, Jim earned a reputation for being a principled conservative and effective legislator. He quickly rose through the ranks to serve on the Committee on Financial Services, as vice-chair of the Subcommittee on Financial Institutions and Consumer Credit, and as a member of the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations. After just two years, Jim was named to the powerful Ways and Means Committees and Budget Committees.

Over 30 years ago, Jim Renacci moved to Ohio with a few hundred dollars, dreaming American dreams of starting a family and launching a business. Growing up in a blue-collar union family in western Pennsylvania, Jim Renacci was the first in his family to graduate from college.

Not only did the blue-collar entrepreneur realize his own dream, but Jim also became the answer to countless Ohioans.

Marrying his childhood sweetheart Tina, Jim started implementing his entrepreneurial vision of owning a small business, providing jobs and livelihoods for local families. As can only happen in America, the Ohioan entrepreneur soon laid claim to operating over 60 businesses, creating 1,500 new jobs, employing over 3,000 people statewide.

But politics had other plans. In 2009, the Obama Administration took over General Motors, shuttering dealerships across the country— including Jim’s in Northeast Ohio. Shutting down Jim’s dealership killed 50 good-paying jobs in his community — and Jim wasn’t going to stand by while neighbors were going hungry. How could Washington blatantly interfere in the everyday lives of hard-working Americans who wanted nothing more but their own chance at the American Dream?

Jim’s track record as a blue-collar entrepreneur demonstrates his only allegiance has ever been to the very people who D.C. bureaucrats forcibly unemployed that fateful day in an Ohio car dealership — the everyday Americans forgotten by the Swamp. He represents the people’s hopes and fears, bringing actionable results back to the working people who gave him a voice.
