A threat received by the FBI over the weekend leaves indication that protection is needed, according to Second Amendment.
Over the weekend, the FBI’s Newark office made note of “credible information” about a “broad threat” to local synagogues in New Jersey. Though nothing came of it, it has brought question into whether firearms should be allowed in places of worship.
Second Amendment Foundation Executive Director Adam Kraut made note of laws that prevented weapons from being brought into churches. “With the recent decision in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, Inc., et al. v. Bruen, et al., legislatures have passed, or are attempting to pass, a plethora of laws that directly implicate an individual’s ability to carry in a place of worship.”
New York Governor Kathy Hochul was among one of the big names to sign a law preventing firearms from being taken into churches due to them being deemed “sensitive places.” But in light of what’s happening with growing violence, the SAF believes they need to be overturned in the name of protection.
“These credible threats against synagogues demonstrate the need for individuals to be able to exercise their right to bear arms outside of the home,” Kraut explained. “As SAF’s briefing in Hardaway demonstrated, carrying firearms in places of worship is consistent with the text of the Second Amendment, as informed by this nation’s history and tradition – the test to be applied to Second Amendment challenges as reaffirmed by Bruen. Moreover, the Supreme Court has ruled consistently that the police have no general duty to protect the public.”
Here now to discuss this further is a representative with the Second Amendment Foundation, a group that remains committed to protecting, restoring, and expanding Second Amendment civil rights.
Q&A:
- Why are so many cities pushing to keep firearms out of churches in the first place? Is it a protection issue, or more along the lines of “respect for God and religion”?
- With the rise in active shooter events, do you believe that having Constitutional-carry citizens in churches and other public places can make a difference in terms of protecting others?
- You’ve spoken in the past about how Constitutional-carry citizens can make a difference when officers aren’t available to stop a potential shooter. Do you still believe this is the most viable solution to fighting back against such events?
- What would you say to someone that believes that guns shouldn’t be brought into churches? What would be your best argument point for that?
- If you had the opportunity to write a law allowing guns to be carried into churches, how would you go about it? Would there be any sort of restrictions?
- Where can we learn more about the Second Amendment Foundation and its members?
