Coming (Back) to America (Guest: Jim Renacci)

Debate Over Return of Illegal Alien Missing the Point

Kilmar Abrego Garcia was an illegal alien before he was deported to El Salvador. He is not a “Maryland Man” in the implied conventional sense, as the mainstream media drills that narrative into the heads of Americans. His status as an affiliate or member of the violent MS-13 gang has devolved into a “he said, she said” debate.

According to Rep. Jim Renacci, who was a member of Congress when the immigration debate was its most highly charged, that’s not the issue. The issue is that the highest court in the land has ruled 9-0 that the Trump administration must “facilitate” the return of Garcia to the U.S.

The case of Kilmar Abrego García is messy—no question about it. There are credible concerns about his ties to MS-13. There are valid fears about the threat such individuals may pose. But there’s something even more dangerous than a gang member slipping through the cracks: the idea that any presidential administration—Republican or Democrat—can simply ignore the highest court in the land when it becomes inconvenient.

The Supreme Court of the United States ruled 9-0 that the government must “facilitate” García’s return to the United States. That’s not a left-leaning court. That’s not a partisan decision. That is a unanimous ruling from one of the most ideologically divided courts in modern history.

When a court that can’t agree on the meaning of a comma comes together unanimously—liberals, conservatives, and originalists alike—to rebuke an administration’s actions, it speaks volumes. Whether the return of García is a matter of legal procedure, technicality, or basic human rights doesn’t even matter at this stage. The law is the law. The Supreme Court has spoken. And the Constitution does not include an asterisk that says, “unless we don’t like the person involved.”

The Trump administration doesn’t have to like the ruling. But it does have to follow it. And any official or talking head who claims otherwise now stands nine times weaker than they did before—because nine Justices made it perfectly clear: even a bad guy has rights when the law says he does. And ignoring that doesn’t make us tough. It makes us lawless.

Jim Renacci is available for interviews to discuss the economic implications of Trump’s trade policies.

OPTIONAL Q&A

  1. You’ve made it clear you’re not defending Kilmar Abrego García personally—but what message do you think it sends when the federal government defies a 9-0 Supreme Court ruling?
  2. How do you respond to critics who argue that facilitating García’s return could pose a national security risk?
  3. Do you believe the Trump administration is in contempt of court by not taking more concrete steps to comply with the ruling?
  4. You’ve emphasized the importance of the rule of law—how dangerous is it when political leaders treat Supreme Court decisions as optional, depending on the person involved?

ABOUT JIM RENACCI…

In 2010, Jim filed to run for U.S. Congress in Ohio’s 16th Congressional District, taking on a well-funded Democratic incumbent. Jim won the election by 9 percent.

While in Congress, Jim earned a reputation for being a principled conservative and effective legislator. He quickly rose through the ranks to serve on the Committee on Financial Services, as vice-chair of the Subcommittee on Financial Institutions and Consumer Credit, and as a member of the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations. After just two years, Jim was named to the powerful Ways and Means Committees and Budget Committees.

Not only did the blue-collar entrepreneur realize his own dream, but Jim also became the answer to countless Ohioans. As can only happen in America, the Ohioan entrepreneur soon laid claim to operate over 60 businesses, creating 1,500 new jobs, employing over 3,000 people statewide.

But politics had other plans. In 2009, the Obama Administration took over General Motors, shuttering dealerships across the country— including Jim’s in Northeast Ohio. Shutting down Jim’s dealership killed 50 good-paying jobs in his community — and Jim wasn’t going to stand by while neighbors were going hungry. How could Washington blatantly interfere in the everyday lives of hard-working Americans who wanted nothing more but their own chance at the American Dream?

Jim’s track record as a blue-collar entrepreneur demonstrates his only allegiance has ever been to the very people who D.C. bureaucrats forcibly unemployed that fateful day in an Ohio car dealership — the everyday Americans forgotten by the Swamp. He represents the people’s hopes and fears, bringing actionable results back to the working people who gave him a voice.
