Artificial intelligence has now entered the conversation as an existential threat. A former AI researcher and whistleblower has warned that artificial intelligence could potentially destroy humanity within the next decade. Meanwhile, in a video interview, billionaire Peter Thiel was asked if he wants humanity to endure. He hesitated prior to answering the question. Questions about the attitudes of some of the Big Tech’s most powerful figures continue to surface thanks, in part, to the rise of AI and all that comes with it.
But Pederson argues that AI is only part of the story.
In an excerpt from Sacrificing Humanity, Pederson describes what he calls a “Breakaway Civilization,” an extraordinarily wealthy, secretive group that he says believes most of humanity could ultimately be eliminated, leaving a small number of survivors to serve an elite that would rebuild civilization in its own image. Most disturbingly, Pederson says this is not something he merely researched or heard as an internet rumor. He claims he personally encountered members of this world and was told things that profoundly changed his understanding of the threats facing humanity.
Pederson recounts a 2014 encounter with the CEO of a major European pharmaceutical corporation who, according to Pederson, told him and his business partner that he wanted a pandemic “to wipe out humanity,” followed by a global nuclear war. Pederson says the conversation took place years before COVID-19 and argues that subsequent events have made that encounter impossible for him to simply dismiss.
His warning becomes even more ominous when viewed alongside the technologies now capable of producing civilization-level consequences. Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, nuclear weapons, genetic engineering and autonomous systems all place unprecedented power in the hands of governments, corporations and individuals. The question is no longer simply whether any one of these technologies is dangerous and able to be weaponized against humanity itself. It is what happens when these technologies converge.
In context, it’s reminiscence is almost Biblical, with a disturbing connection to Revelation 6:15-17, where kings, mighty men, the rich and powerful, and people from every level of society hide themselves in caves and among the rocks, desperately seeking protection from an approaching judgment.
Revelation 6: 15 Then the kings of the earth and the magnates and the generals and the rich and the powerful, and everyone, slave and free, hid in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains, 16 calling to the mountains and rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of the one seated on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb; 17 for the great day of their wrath has come, and who is able to stand?”
If there are indeed powerful people with the mindset Pederson claims to have witnessed, such individuals appear to be ignoring the 16th verse. Once they realize what they’ve done, they cry out, asking for the rocks they’re under to come crashing down on them, something they see as a better fate.
Is that merely apocalyptic imagery, or could humanity be creating the very circumstances that make such imagery suddenly feel less remote?
Pederson’s message is ultimately about survival. AI may pose an existential threat, but it is not necessarily the only one. Nuclear war, biotechnology, elite technological power and unexplained phenomena may represent different pieces of the same larger puzzle.
Pederson says he witnessed one of those pieces up close—and what he claims he was told in 2014 remains profoundly disturbing today.
