Huge Breakthrough in the Middle East: Israel and United Arab Emirates Reach Historic Peace Deal

Intro: Israel and the United Arab Emirates have reached an agreement to normalize relations between the two countries for the first time since the establishment of the Jewish state in 1948, according to a report by Reuters Thursday afternoon. The agreement was brokered by President Trump and his administration.

“Israel will suspend declaring sovereignty over areas outlined in the President’s Vision for Peace and focus its efforts now on expanding ties with other countries in the Arab and Muslim world,” reads a joint statement to be issued by the US, Israel, and the UAE which President Trump tweeted out.

Here to explain is David Rubin, former mayor of Shiloh, Israel, and author of the book, “Trump and the Jews.”

Q&A:

  1. President Trump is calling this a “huge breakthrough”. Is it really or is he looking for a headline overshadow the Kamala Harris story? This is absolutely a big deal. Other than Egypt and Jordan, no country in the Middle East has dared to establish full relations with Israel and this one has strategic geo-political significance.
  2. And what specifically is that significance? The UAE is located in the Persian Gulf, adjacent to Saudi Arabia and directly across the water from Iran, which has been threatening the UAE and Saudi Arabia, as well as the other countries in the Persian Gulf.
  3. As part of the deal, Israel has agreed to suspend its plan for declaring sovereignty over parts of Judea and Samaria (the West Bank). Since Netanyahu has promised that to his electoral base, will that create political problems for him at home? I believe that in the short term most Israelis will understand the circumstances. However, if that suspension of the sovereignty declaration is indefinite, it could hurt him electorally since a plurality of Israelis now support Israeli sovereignty at least over a portion of Judea and Samaria.
  4. How will this announcement impact the Trump-Biden race? For eight years, the Obama-Biden administration had a tense relationship with Israel and there were no breakthroughs in the peace process. President Trump in his three and a half years in office has proven with his leadership that appeasement of the Palestinian terrorists is not the path to peace in the Middle East, rather the focus should be on standing firmly with America’s best ally, Israel, and helping to expand bilateral relations between Israel and its neighbors.
