Bowing to Beijing, the Hong Kong legislature rushed through tough laws that crack down on opposition to Hong Kong and Beijing. Penalties include life in prison.
The 212-page bill introduces 39 new national security crimes – some with loosely defined terms – that include treason, espionage, external interference and unlawful handling of state secrets, among others. Many of those who opposed the last troubling bill in 2020 are still in prison. Nearly all of the opposition has been expunged.
The laws, passed unanimously, will take effect Saturday.
The development leaves many concerned that China will soon turn their aggression on Taiwan, the island they have been threatening to invade for decades.
