Hey, Senate: Stop the Suppression!

A spokesman for the Gun Owners of America explains why the Senate must act when it comes to two important key reforms, set to protect millions of private gun owners.

The Gun Owners of America are making it loud and clear – the rights of private gun owners must be protected.

In a new letter sent to Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Senate Finance Committee Chairman Mike Crapo, the group, alongside over 40 prominent media voices and influencers, pushed for the group to accept two key reforms:

  • Section 3 of the Hearing Protection Act, which ensures that gun owners in anti-gun states are protected when purchasing suppressors in accordance with federal law.
  • The Stop Harassing Owners of Rifles Today (SHORT) Act, which would eliminate the unconstitutional National Firearms Act (NFA) tax and registry requirements for short-barreled rifles and shotguns.

The Senate had previously included Section 2 of the Hearing Protection Act, which was a step in the right direction. But these two new reforms would allow private gun owners to protect themselves further from the ATF’s push against pistol braces – something that had effected them since the Biden days.

For good measure, constitutional protections for popular firearms targeted by the NFA’s arbitrary barrel length rules would also be assured.

Erich Pratt, who serves as Vice President of Gun Owners of America, noted, “The House opened the door—now the Senate must walk through it. The inclusion of Section 3 of the Hearing Protection Act and the full SHORT Act is essential to restoring the rights of law-abiding Americans and rolling back unconstitutional mandates that the ATF has used for decades to harass gun owners. The time to act is now.”

A spokesman for the Gun Owners of America joins us now to discuss this issue further. We welcome them to the show!

Q&A:

  1. These two reforms seem like key additions that would protect the rights of private gun owners. How much of a blow would these be against the ATF?
  2. Section 3 of the Hearing Protection Act would ensure that gun owners in anti-gun states are protected when purchasing suppressors in accordance with Federal law. Does it still bother you how some states try to push laws against these?
  3. Then there’s the Stop Harassing Owners of Rifles Today (SHORT) Act, which would eliminate the unconstitutional National Firearms Act (NFA) tax and registry requirements for short-barreled rifles and shotguns. How costly are these to private gun owners?
  4. Do you believe, with this push by your group and influencers, the Senate will finally listen and put these two reforms in place? Or is there any kind of uphill struggle that stands in the way?
  5. Where do you see the fight regarding gun rights going in the months ahead? Will some Democrats continue to push against them in certain states?
