Israeli Mayor, 2A Spox Hanukkah Shootings

Hanukkah Horror: Islamic Attackers Target Jews in Australia, Strict Gun Laws Fail to stop Massacre

The deadly attack on a Hanukkah celebration in Australia has reignited urgent questions about self-defense, terrorism, and the real-world consequences of strict gun control. More than a dozen people were murdered when gunmen opened fire on a Jewish gathering in what authorities have described as a targeted act of extremist violence. One attacker was killed at the scene, another taken into custody, and investigators are examining ideological motives reportedly linked to Islamist extremism.

Stephen Willeford, the Texas man who famously ran toward gunfire during the Sutherland Springs church massacre and helped stop a mass shooter, brings a rare and authoritative perspective to what unfolded. David Rubin, former mayor of Shiloh, Israel, was on the receiving end of an Islamic terror attack, with his young son. Both Rubin and his young child barely escaped.

Willeford has publicly praised the courage of a civilian at the Australian attack who wrestled a firearm away from one of the gunmen. But he also points out a critical and uncomfortable truth: disarming one attacker did not end the threat. The shooter returned to his original position and resumed firing with another weapon, turning bravery into tragedy.

Willeford argues this is precisely the scenario gun-control advocates rarely confront. Australia is often cited as a model for strict firearms laws, yet the attackers were still able to legally obtain guns and carry out a mass shooting against people they likely assumed were unarmed. Courage alone was not enough. The delay between danger and response proved fatal.

Rubin and his young son were ambushed by Muslim terrorists in Israel and narrowly escaped with their lives. He knows what it means to be targeted because of faith, to be attacked without warning, and to face violence where hesitation can mean death.

Together, Willeford and/or Rubin can speak powerfully to the intersection of terrorism, civilian vulnerability, and the false promise that gun control alone can prevent ideological violence. Their message is not partisan or abstract. It is grounded in survival, experience, and the grim recognition that when attackers choose their moment, victims cannot rely on laws, distance, or hope.

This is a conversation about what actually stops mass violence — and what tragically does not.
