The Epoch Times’ Nan Su comments on a new report released by Microsoft – and why the U.S. should be concerned.
As if tension wasn’t already at an all-time high between China and the United States, a new report reveals that hackers have successfully infiltrated the account of several U.S. State Department employees.
According to Microsoft, China-based hackers managed to breach accounts from two major U.S. government agencies. While specific departments were not mentioned, they estimate that 25 employees have been affected.
The campaign has been ongoing for a month, according to the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), during a time in which top Chinese officials were meeting with leaders from the departments that were reportedly hacked. Among the top employees affected were Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, who had previously met with China’s commerce minister, Wang Wentao.
Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.), who serves with the Senate Intelligence Committee, noted that the group was “closely monitoring what appears to be a significant cybersecurity breach by Chinese intelligence.”
So what was the reason for the breach, and what happens now? Joining us to discuss this further is Nan Su, a senior investigative reporter for The Epoch Times. His knowledge of all things China-related will prove very useful for this particular subject.
Q&A:
- Why do you think Chinese hackers were trying to break into the accounts of state department employees, especially at a time when one of their representatives was meeting with the commerce minister?
- Do you believe China was just trying to get the upper hand on information provided during the meeting? Or another form of communication?
- These hacks have been ongoing for the past month, according to CISA. Should people be concerned that China has such easy access to U.S. commerce? Can it potentially be used against them if the two were to go to war?
- There has been genuine uneasiness between the two countries, and it’s likely this situation will continue to add to the tension. Could we see sanctions handed down to China for the hacks? Or perhaps another form of punishment?
- Will the Judiciary Committee investigating China possibly add this to its ongoing list of activities?
- How do you think China will respond to any accusations made over these hacks?
- Speaking of uneasiness with China, you recently contributed to a new Epoch Times documentary called The Final War. Tell us more about it and why it’s such a compelling subject with everything that’s happening right now.
- Where can we learn more about you and see your work over on The Epoch Times?
