Gun Owners of America Secures a Major Victory Over California’s Uncalled-For Background Checks

Spokesman Stephen Willeford explains why the Second Amendment-fueled win is a big one – even though other battles lie ahead.

Gov. Gavin Newsom has had a vendetta against gun owners for the longest time. As such, he’s attempted to put a number of rules in place to make owning a gun a near impossibility. Alas, he forgot about the Second Amendment, and the protection it provides.

Late last week, a Federal Judge ruled that California’s required background checks on ammunition sales violated the Second Amendment. As such, they have knocked down the law, which means Newsom, as well as California officials, can no longer enforce it.

To add to that, the Gun Owners of America – one of the groups responsible for lobbying the law be knocked down – also noted how their attorneys assisted in a team effort to strike down several “Gun-Free Zones” within California.

“We successfully encouraged a panel on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals to prevent anti-gunners from enforcing their ban on carrying firearms throughout much of the state,” the group noted in a press release.

But this is merely the beginning, as Newsom will likely work out some other form of restriction in the future, rather than build towards potential laws for Constitutional-Carry (or Concealed-Carry) types that work to keep our country safe.

Joining us now to discuss this victory further is Stephen Willeford, a spokesman for the Gun Owners of America. He was previously the “hero with a gun” in the Sutherland Springs situation back in 2017, an incident that he has since co-authored a book about. His expertise in all things gun rights make him an ideal subject for this interview.

Q&A:

  1. First off, how does it feel to have California’s super-strict background check on ammunition sales law knocked down?
  2. Your group also assisted in the elimination of several “Gun-Free Zones” within the state. Why do you feel it is important that Constitutional-Carry (or Concealed Carry) citizens should be allowed to enter these zones?
  3. What do you think Gov. Newsom’s response to these recent legal decisions will be? Could he possibly come up with new amendments against gun owners as 2024 continues?
  4. Do you think that guns – and the rights of those that use them – will be a big topic when it comes to the 2024 Presidential Election?
  5. What argument would you have for those that believe that Constitutional-Carry citizens means “more guns on the streets”?
  6. You recently wrote a book called A Town Called Sutherland Springs: Faith and Heroism Through Tragedy, revolving around your 2017 “hero with a gun” situation. Tell us more about how this came together, and why it’s such an important read right now.
  7. Where can people find your book?
    1. You can purchase the book here on Amazon, both in paperback and Kindle format.
  8. Where can we learn more about you, as well as Gun Owners of America?
    1. You can learn more at http://www.thebarefootdefender.com. You can also read more about the Gun Owners of America at https://www.gunowners.org/.
