Jewish Collateral: European Jews can Become Collateral Damage in Conflicts they Didn’t Choose
Jewish communities across Europe are increasingly caught in the crossfire of anger over the war in Gaza, with Germany now at the center of growing concerns about the safety of Jews in public life. For Thomas Frederik, author of Hitler’s Jewish Biography: His Personal Contacts and Conflicts with Jews, Germany’s warning that “Jewish life is no longer safe” raises a disturbing historical question: How does a conflict involving a government become a threat to Jews who have nothing to do with it?

Frederik’s book documents a series of remarkable relationships between prominent Jews and Hitler’s regime, including cases in which Jewish individuals cooperated with the Nazi government despite the regime’s antisemitic ideology. Jewish Olympic star Helene Mayer competed for Nazi Germany and gave the Hitler salute after winning silver in 1936.
Hitler the Hypocrite
Jewish hockey legend Rudi Ball struck a deal with Hitler to compete for Germany in the Olympics in exchange for allowing his family to emigrate. Nobel Prize-winning Jewish scientist Otto Warburg was permitted to continue his cancer research under Hitler. Industrialist Arthur Imhausen manufactured essential goods for the German war effort and was ultimately designated an “Honorary Aryan.” Frederik says these cases illustrate a central lesson of his research: cooperation with dictators can inadvertently legitimize the policies of the very regime threatening a population.
That historical lesson, Frederik argues, has profound relevance to Europe today. He points to the growing danger that anger over the Israel-Gaza war can be transferred from governments and military policies onto ordinary Jews who have no role in the conflict. A September 23 report from All Israel News highlighted warnings that Jewish life in Germany is becoming increasingly unsafe amid political and social tensions surrounding the war.
Frederik argues that the cycle is tragically familiar: political leaders wage war, while ordinary Jews ultimately pay a price, sometimes through antisemitism directed at people who had nothing to do with the decisions being made. He believes the Gaza conflict has imported Middle Eastern political divisions into European streets and communities.
Frederik is available to discuss the historical parallels, the uncomfortable examples of Jewish cooperation with Hitler, and why he believes European governments must distinguish between opposition to Israeli policy and hostility toward Jews.
