Friends, Foes, and Foreign Policy (Guest: David Rubin)

A Michigan Democratic Senate nominee believes Israel isn’t really allies with the United States.

Even though President Donald Trump has made it clear that the United States is united with Israel in its fight against Iran, there are some who believe another agenda is in play. And that includes Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed, who had choice words about the “partnership.” And it’s something that bothers former Mayor of Shiloh David Rubin, founder and president of the Shiloh Israel Children’s Fund.

  • El-Sayed noted during an ABC News interview that he does not believe Israel is “not the U.S.’ friend.”
  • “An ally that takes your money to push you into wars you shouldn’t be fighting is not an ally,” El-Sayed believes.
  • He then compared Israel to a friend who “keeps bumming off (your kids’ money) and then talks about them behind their back…”
  • In the past, there has been uneasiness between Trump and Netanyahu, especially with the previous peacetime agreement with Iran.
  • As of late, Trump has thrown his full support behind Netanyahu with his re-election in Israel, believing the two sides could finally “finish the job” when it comes to Iran.

During the interview, El-Sayed stated his belief that Israel isn’t buddy-buddy with the United States. “An ally that takes your money to push you into wars you shouldn’t be fighting is not an ally.”

He then further compared Israel to a friend who “keeps bumming off (your kids’ money) and then talking about them behind their back and gets them into fights with their other friends. What would you tell your kid? You’d probably tell them, ‘Maybe that’s not actually your friend.’”

He concluded, “I think it’s time for us to realize that Israel is actually not our friend.”

There had been reported uneasiness between Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the past, especially when the latter objected to the former’s peacetime agreement with Iran.

However, it seems they are back on the same page, especially with Trump’s recent endorsement for Netanyahu as he seeks re-election for his Prime Minister position. He even stated how the two sides will work together to “soon finish the job” against Iran.

But are the two sides really eye-to-eye again? Or will differences arise that could show the true nature of their relationship?

Rubin joins us now to discuss this situation further. Welcome, Mayor Rubin!

Q&A:

  1. What is your reaction to El-Sayed’s assertion that Israel is not truly an ally of the United States?
  2. El-Sayed has previously criticized Israel and argued that both Israel and Iran have “both proven dangerous” to the United States. What do you make of his position, and how much of it do you believe is directed at Netanyahu versus Israeli policy more broadly?
  3. El-Sayed is running for the U.S. Senate in Michigan. Do you think his comments reflect his genuine foreign-policy views, an attempt to distinguish himself politically, or both?
  4. How would you characterize the current relationship between the United States and Israel? Can the two countries maintain a strong alliance as they pursue their objectives in the conflict with Iran?
  5. Trump and Netanyahu have disagreed over policy toward Iran in the past, including the previous nuclear agreement. How significant have those disagreements been, and could they create further tension between the two leaders?
  6. Where do you see the conflict involving Israel, the United States, and Iran heading? What kind of resolution, if any, do you believe is possible with Hamas?
  7. Tell us more about your work with the Shiloh Israel Children’s Fund and how it helps children and families in need.
  8. Where can we learn more about you and the Shiloh Israel Children’s Fund?
