Fili-busted? Why the GOA Believes This Is the Wrong Way To Restart the Government

A spokesman for the Gun Owners of America explains why doing away with the filibuster to restart the government would be a disaster for gun rights.

The government continues to sit in shutdown, and President Donald Trump is trying to find ways to get it moving again. But one current idea could very well spell trouble for private gun owners.

Trump recently called on the Senate to use the “nuclear option” to reopen the government. But, by doing this, it would do away with the filibuster. While some may be pleased by the idea of the government reopening again, doing away with this is a bad idea.

The Gun Owners of America explained this, stating how it is a “critical tool” it utilizes for doing away with things like:

  • Mandatory gun registration
  • Bans on common firearms
  • Crushing restrictions on gun shows
  • National gun confiscation laws
  • Countless other gun-grabbing schemes.

The group noted, “If the filibuster fails, no matter who demands it, the gun control crowd in Congress will ram every radical gun control bill into law.”

Stephen Willeford, the “hero with a gun” who serves as spokesman for the Gun Owners of America, joins us now to discuss the situation further.

Q&A:

  1. How has the Gun Owners of America been using this filibuster when it comes to pushing back against anti-gun legislation?
  2. Why would doing away with the filibuster be such a disastrous move when it comes to restarting the government?
  3. Is Trump so desperate to reopen the government that he’s not seeing the damage that could be done to gun rights?
  4. What is the alternate solution to this problem, you think? Is there another way to get the government running again without doing away with the filibuster?
  5. Speaking of what’s happening in government, where do you see the argument surrounding gun rights going as 2026 approaches? Will some cities continue to try and create anti-gun laws?
  6. You recently wrote a book called A Town Called Sutherland Springs: Faith and Heroism Through Tragedy, revolving around your 2017 “hero with a gun” situation. Tell us more about how this came together, and why it’s such an important read right now.
  7. Where can people find your book?
  8. You can purchase the book here on Amazon, both in paperback and Kindle format.
  9. Where can we learn more about you, as well as Gun Owners of America?
