Former Mayor of Shiloh Israel David Rubin provides his thoughts on this particular outlook.
With antisemitism rising to its highest level last year (per this report from the Anti-Defamation League), Jewish people seem to be the target of a number of hatred attacks. Now, the FBI has confirmed this, with some startling numbers.
The bureau’s director, Christopher Wray, recently spoke in a discussion with US Congressman Josh Gottheimer over the matter, noting that 64 percent of religious hate crimes were motivated by some form of antisemitism, “and that’s targeting a group that makes up about 2.4 percent of the American population.”
As a result, Wray notes that Jewish people in the United States are “getting hit from all sides” and “desperately” need support as a result. It has since raised the threat of antisemitism to a “national priority” as a result. “It’s a community that deserves and desperately needs our support because it’s getting hit from all sides,” he explained.
Synagogues have been the target of attacks over the past few years, including a 2018 incident, in which 11 people were killed at the Tree of Life congregation.
Here to discuss this matter is the former Mayor of Shiloh, David Rubin, who is also the author of seven books and founder of Shiloh Israel Children’s Fund. His expertise should prove quite useful in this matter.
Q&A:
- What do you think is the reason for the rise in antisemitism in this country? Would you say that social media played a big part in that, allowing people to amplify their messages of hate even further?
- Are you shocked by the number of attacks that synagogues have seen over the past few years? What do you think would push someone to put such a place under attack?
- What do you think about Christopher Wray’s comments that Jewish people are “getting hit from all sides”? Do you see this possibly getting worse as 2023 rolls around?
- Do you believe the FBI will actually provide some much-needed protection? Or, at the very least, take a closer look at where antisemitism is increasing?
- What kind of viable solution do you see when it comes to antisemitism? Or is there an easy one to find?
- Where can we learn more about you and your work with Shiloh Israel Children?
