Europe Has Made a Deal To Cut Natural Gas Use, But Will the Deal Last? (Guest: Guy Mitchell)

This week, European Union governments made an agreement to cut back on consumption of natural gas over the winter, in the hopes of avoiding any further supply cuts by Russia during its invasion of Ukraine.

The law notes that it expects the countries to lower demand for gas by roughly 15 percent starting in August, though some are apparently exempt from the deal. It notes the steps to reduce gas consumption are voluntary, but if not enough is saved, it could result in mandatory actions.

However, some have some skepticism behind the deal, especially considering the rising cost of electricity across Europe. The last increase saw a 21 percent jump to around $216/MW, compared to just $120/MW in the United States. That leaves many wondering just how much the European Union governments will keep the deal intact.

Here to discuss this deal (and the potential fallout from it) is Guy Mitchell, author of Global Warming: The Great Deception. In the book, Mitchell sets out to disprove every science-based claim made by climate scientists and the proponents of the man-made global warming hypothesis. His expertise will certainly prove useful with this topic.

Q&A:

  1. Why do you believe people are so skeptical about the deal to cut back on natural gas? Is it the rising cost of electricity, or another factor?
  2. What’s your thoughts on some countries in the deal having certain exemptions compared to others? Was it some sort of “bottom line” that had to be met in order to get them to sign?
  3. The cost of electricity seems to be skyrocketing in Europe, nearly twice as much as the United States. This is in spite of what the country has done with its coal fired power plant capacity. What do you think is happening?
  4. By contrast, China has increased its coal fired power plant capacity by nearly five times over the years. Could Europe be looking at this and reconsidering its plans, or will they try to proceed forward and make it work the best that it can?
  5. Czech Industry Minister Jozef Sikela noted that “sacrifice was necessary” to make this happen. But the real question is…is it?
  6. What’s the fallout from a deal such as this? If Europe tries to use mandatory methods to cut back on natural gas, how will this affect consumers? And for that matter, what if those specific exemptions end up being taken from certain countries, if they can be?
  7. Where may we pick up a copy of your book, Global Warming: The Great Deception?
  8. It’s available for purchase on Amazon. There’s also a  Kindle version.
