The Gun Owners of America are pleased with the Department of Justice fighting back against ridiculous state laws.
Even with Donald Trump in the White House and the Second Amendment of the Constitution in place, a number of states still feel the need to impose unfair gun laws on their citizens. And this frustrates Gun Owners of America spokesman Stephen Willeford to no end.
- The Justice Department recently filed lawsuits against California and Virginia regarding unfair restrictions against gun owners.
- Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger and California Governor Gavin Newsom imposes laws that restrict sales of certain firearms within their states.
- Previous laws that have stopped citizens from buying firearms have usually been knocked down, thanks to the Second Amendment of the Constitution.
Per this report from Fox News, the Justice Department recently struck back against state gun restrictions earlier this week, filing lawsuits against both Virginia and California. This comes just after the Supreme Court noted that the Second Amendment is not a “second-class right.”
Both of these states have imposed firearm laws, specifically the sale of certain firearms, such as Glock-style semiautomatic pistols in California and the manufacture, sale, transfer and purchase of certain semiautomatic firearms (and assault weapons) in Virginia.
Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet Dhillon made it clear that, with these lawsuits, it is not taking these restrictions lightly in the least. “This lawsuit is yet another example of this Justice Department enforcing the Second Amendment by protecting citizens against unconstitutional state regulation of firearms.”
That said, California attorney general Rob Bonta has refused to back down – or even negotiate. “The Unsafe Handgun Act and Penal Code section 27595 are common-sense handgun design safety laws that help to prevent accidental discharges by experienced and non-experienced firearm users, as well as the conversion of semiautomatic pistols into deadly automatic firing weapons.”
Dhillon simply responded with, “See you in court.”

- Even with the Second Amendment in the Constitution, it still seems a lot of states are content with setting up some sort of restrictions on firearms. Why do you think that is?
- They seem to mostly come from Democrats. Do they truly believe that these laws will help protect Americans?
- What about Bonta’s deflection of the DOJ lawsuit, stating that the code is in place simply to “prevent accidental dischargers by experienced and non-experienced firearm users”? Is this just a lame excuse?
- What about blocking the conversion of semiautomatic pistols into automatics? Does Bonta really have any need to be concerned about this?
- How do you think the lawsuits will go? Will the DOJ win with the Second Amendment behind them?
