Do Your Local Elected Officials Need Encouragement To Fight Crime? (Guest: Michael Letts)

Law enforcement veteran Michael Letts challenges local officials to fight crime. But do others needs challenging?

In the face of a growing crime wave in the city of New Orleans, Mayor LaToya Cantrell has assigned a temporary police superintendent to lend a hand until she can get someone permanent in 2023. But that may not be enough to account for her own actions.

Fox News is reporting that New Orleans Captain Michelle Woodfork will become the city’s first female police superintendent, working with local police forces until January 1st passes, and Cantrell can find a more permanent replacement.

But the move seems to be overshadowed by Cantrell’s own actions. While the city sees a massive increase in crime and diminishing police ranks, she has used taxpayers’ money to take lavish trips and partake in other expenditures. Earlier this month, it was reported that New Orleans citizens have attempted to recall the mayor, though she has made no comment on the matter.

This brings about a question in terms of whether other government officials are following Cantrell’s suit – and how much it’s hurting police departments.

Where this will take the city – and other cities, for that matter – in 2023 has yet to be seen. However, Michael Letts, a law enforcement veteran with over 30 years under his belt, is here to speak to us about the matter. He is president, founder and CEO of InVest USA, an organization that provides bulletproof vests to officers through various charitable groups and sponsorships. His expertise in all things law should prove useful in this matter.

Q&A:

  1. What’s probably the bigger concern here – Mayor Cantrell’s spending with a massive crime rise going on in her city, or the fact she won’t even address the matter?
  2. Cantrell spending money on trips and what-not instead of the police is rather questionable. What does it say about certain governments and their lack of spending on police departments as a whole?
  3. Captain Woodfork is replacing Superintendent Shaun Ferguson, who some believe is the partial reason behind the increase in crime in the city. Do you think Woodfork will be able to change things for the better? Or will she need support from Cantrell?
  4. Do you believe Congress will finally pass the “fund the police” bill making the rounds and provide some much-needed support to cities such as New Orleans and New York City?
  5. Are there cities in our audience where leadership should be questioned? Should recall be an option?
  6. You’re the driving factor of InVest USA, an organization that provides bulletproof vests to police officers through various charitable groups and sponsorships. Tell us more about that, and why support for fellow officers is so important right now.
  7. We understand that InVest USA is also actively involved with Twitter. Where can interested parties learn more?
