The CompassCare CEO discusses the actions and motivation of the Kalamazoo, MI Planned Parenthood attacker
Joshua Brereton was sentenced for the arson of a Planned Parenthood facility has been sentenced for his actions, but it’s the fallout that people should be paying attention to.
Earlier this week, Joshua Brereton plead guilty to the crime of “Arson of an Institution or Organization Receiving Federal Funding,” and will serve 5 years in Federal prison along with paying a fine of over $32,000 for the damages. Brereton noted that he acted alone with no political or religious motivation, and even posted a video stating as such.
However, both the U.S. District Judge Maloney and U.S. Attorney Mark Totten for the Western District of MI have claimed that the Brereton was politically motivated, and could be representing an orchestrated effort. The Associated Press claimed that he was religiously motivated, attempting to tie him in with other groups. These claims are refuted by the sentencing of Brereton as well as his own description of his motivation.
Rev. Jim Harden, the CEO of CompassCare, which provides pregnancy services across the country, noted in a statement, “It appears that the Federal government usurped the policing power of the MI authorities, in violation of the 10th Amendment, to use this case to further the false political narrative that pro-life people are violent. Despite over 230 attacks on pro-life entities in 2022 alone, it is odd that neither the DOJ nor the judge nor the Associated Press even acknowledges the nationwide, conspiratorial domestic terror against peaceful pro-life organizations and people.”
Brereton is not being charged with any FACE Act violations by the federal government, despite his actions. Rev. Harden explained in a press release, “Through this sentence, while it is good and right for Brereton to pay for his crime, the Department of Justice quietly admits that a right to abortion is no longer recognized in federal law.”
Rev. Harden, or CompassCare Director of Community Relations Daniel Tomlinson, joins us now to discuss the matter further.
Q&A:
- Why do you think Judge Maloney and U.S. Attorney Mark Totten were quick in trying to tie Brereton’s actions to a supposed larger group? Were they trying to gain some mileage for their political messages?
- Where do you believe Brereton’s motivations lie?
- The AP believes that Brereton’s attack was “inspired by a church sermon.” Why are they saying this in apparent conflict with the facts?
- Do you think this case will make any sort of movement with the other 230+ cases in which a pro-life organization (like the CompassCare’s pro-life medical office in Buffalo last summer) came under attack? Or will those remain unresolved?
- What does it say that the Federal Government did not charge him with a FACE Act violation?
- For those that are interested in supporting CompassCare and learning more about the services they provide, where can they go?
