According to the Miami Herald, Governor Ron DeSantis spoke during the Honoring the Victims of Communism press conference at the Freedom Tower in Miami on Monday, May 9, 2022. DeSantis later signed a bill making Nov. 7 “Victims of Communism Day.”
This makes Florida the first state in the nation to mandate school instruction on communism as Governor DeSantis continues to take the lead to setting precedent for education policy.
The new law will require teaching of Joseph Stalin, Mao Zedong, and Fidel Castro, as well as “poverty, starvation, migration, systemic lethal violence, and suppression of speech” endured under those regimes. DeSantis noted that tens of millions of people died in China under Mao’s rule.
He said, “That body count of Mao is something that everybody needs to understand because it is a direct result of this communist ideology,” DeSantis said, “I know we don’t need legislation here to do this but I think it’s our responsibility to make sure people know about the atrocities committed by people like Fidel Castro and even more recently people like Nicolas Maduro.”
Joining us now to discuss this Governor DeSantis’ latest bold education policy initiative is Sheri Few, who serves as founder and president of the United States Parents Involved In Education (USPIE for short). Sheri also serves as Executive Producer of the new film documentary Truth and Lies In American Education. The film is available for viewing on the film’s website: www.truthandliesfilm.us. Also available on the film’s website is a 3-minute teaser trailer, and here is a 50-second trailer for television audiences.
