The former Mayor of Shiloh discusses the recent meeting between the two leaders, and wonders if Hamas will actually follow suit.
As 2026 approaches, U.S. President Donald Trump and Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have a shared goal in sight – to assure that Hamas disarms over the next couple of months.
During their meeting at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, the two agreed on a two-month period for Hamas to completely be rid of weapons. That also includes the destruction of its extensive tunnel network, something it has been using during its conflict with Israel.
Should Hamas not agree to the terms within this “very short period”, Trump promised “hell to play.”
There has not been any response by Hamas at the moment. That said, there is the possibility that it could agree to said terms, especially considering how it was on board with the ongoing ceasefire with Israel.
So what will Hamas do? Joining us now to discuss this further is David Rubin, former mayor of Shiloh, Israel, and Founder of the Shiloh Israel Children’s Fund. Welcome, Mayor Rubin.
Q&A:
- How do you think the meeting between Trump and Netanyahu went this week? Would you say it’s reached a positive outcome as Netanyahu returns to Israel?
- The two have agreed that Hamas should be given a two month period to disarm and do away with its extensive tunnel network. Is this more than a fair window to provide?
- You believe that very few Israelis think that Hamas will disarm at this point. What will Hamas do as a result? Could they potentially take advantage of the situation?
- You also feel that most Israelis believe peace will not be achieved in 2026. What do you think will happen in the months ahead?
