CRISPR TECHNOLOGY NOW AVAILABLE IS THE KEY TO RE-OPENING SOCIETY!

Futurist Dr. Dan O’Brien MD via Zoom/Skype/Phone/St. Louis/CT

We’ve all thought it. We’ve all felt it: Coronavirus fatigue. Not from the virus itself, but from the seemingly endless news with conflicting reports, but most of it negative, with maybe, possibly, a vaccine around the corner. But one doctor says the future is now. Dr. Dan O’Brien, MD, a medical futurist, joins us to discuss what we can do now to re-open America now with the help of a technology known as CRISPR.

Q&A:

Dr. Dan question #1: Tell us more what CRISPR technology is and is it available?

Dr. Dan answer: This is a type of gene technology that detects viral RNA. It starts with a respiratory specimen from the mouth, nose, or lungs. To make the viral genome easier to identify, scientists convert it over into DNA, and they use a method called isothermal amplification instead of PCR (polymerase chain reaction) The CRISPR part of the assay converts the amplified DNA back into RNA. The FDA granted its first ever emergency use authorization for the gene editing technology, so it is AVAILABLE NOW.

Dr. Dan question #2: Clinically how can CRISPR technology can be applied during COVID?

Dr. Dan answer: First step is to collect patient sample from nose or throat, and then making many copies at a certain temperature. Then a CRISPR molecule, a protein complex known as Cas13 is added to those sample copies. Then if any RNA sequences from the COVID-19 are present in the sample, it latches on and starts cutting them off into smaller pieces some which are tagged by a fluorescent marker. Once detached the sample glows, indicated a positive finding of COVID. The key is being able to create a new standard in healthcare in the diagnostic industry.

Dr. Dan question #3: How long will it take for this technology to be in effect?

Dr. Dan answer: It will take an hour for the results to come but this can be a cheaper at home and workplace diagnostic test

Dr. Dan question #4: What have we learned in regard to the importance of CRISPR technology to public health?

Dr. Dan answer: It is important to be able to provide a point of care nasal swab test to test millions a week in the population to keep the public health safe.

Dr. Dan question #5: Why is the diagnostic industry so important now?

Dr. Dan answer: Diagnostics drive both the development of vaccines and therapies and it’s important to inform public health responses.

Dr. Dan question #6: Is the future bright regarding CRISPR technology to be used in other fields of medicine including cancer?

Dr. Dan answer: Yes, CRISPR technology can be looked at with chronic and other infectious diseases, and even cancer. In Cancer it can be looked at in what genes are involved with cancer. CRISPR addresses an urgent need of finding widespread, accurate, inexpensive, and accessible testing, and the availability of a test is one of the keys for reopening society again.

Dr. Dan question #7: Where may we get more information on you and general health tips?

Answer: Dr. Dan answer: At DrDanMd.com or on Twitter @DrDanMd1
