COVID Cases Are Ramping Up Across Numerous States, At the Same Time That a Hospital Crisis Is Hitting Others

Radio and TV show host Steve Gruber explains how the ongoing crisis ties in with his recent documentary, Flatline: America’s Hospital Crisis.

Even though the holidays are supposed to be jovial, two separate stories indicate that there’s trouble afoot in some states.

In a recent Newsweek piece, an updated map for COVID-19 revealed that there are four states that are showing an increase in positive cases, indicating that the virus isn’t done just yet. Region Seven – consisting of Iowa, Missouri, Kansas and Nebraska – is showing a huge jump in said cases.

While that may not be an alarm to sound off over the return of the pandemic, it is worth keeping tabs on.

But on top of that, Kansas Reflector recently reported has another big problem, with financial “weaknesses” reported at several of their rural hospitals. A report for The Center for Healthcare Quality and Payment Reform notes that 84 of the state’s 102 hospitals recorded some kind of financial loss. As a result, 59 of said hospitals are in jeopardy of closing.

This could be disastrous, especially with symptoms from COVID and other medical issues on the rise.

“How much more evidence do we need that rural communities need our support to keep health care affordable and accessible?” said Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly.

But this is a trend that Steve Gruber has been keeping an eye on. In his new documentary, Flatline: America’s Hospital Crisis, he takes a close look at the alarming state of hospitals in the U.S., detailing why more than 600 of them could face closure due to financial distress.

The documentary “reveals the devastating situation of the hospital closures across the country, examining the root causes and the major players of this health care epidemic and its impact on the local communities,” according to the film’s official page.

Gruber joins us now to discuss this situation further.

Q&A:

  1. Kansas appears to be relying heavily on government aid in an effort to bail out their hospitals from financial distress. How serious an issue would you say this is for hospitals in the United States?
  2. Do you believe the situation will get worse before it gets better as 2024 comes around?
  3. What if COVID-19 makes some form of comeback and these hospitals simply aren’t operational to handle these cases? What do you believe will happen then?
  4. Why do you think Medicaid and related government programs are so slow to provide these hospitals with the funding they require?
  5. Can anything truly be done to save these hospitals in the meantime? Perhaps something by local government?
  6. The movie recently saw its premiere earlier this month, along with a Q&A, both of which can be found on the official site. What do you think of the reception thus far?
  7. Where can we learn more about Flatline: America’s Hospital Crisis, as well as watch the film?
    1. You can watch it on Epoch TV here.
