Colorado Government Knows That an All-Out Gun Ban Wouldn’t Work, Even If Some of Its Citizens Believe It Would

A representative for Second Amendment Foundation explains why the sit-in by Here 4 The Kids won’t lead Gov. Jared Polis to sign any sort of gun-banning bill.

Many believe that an all-out ban of guns would reduce “active shooter” events and violence significantly – and one group in Colorado is going all out to get this message across to Gov. Jared Polis.

A group known as Here 4 The Kids, made up of over a thousand citizens, began a four-day sit-in at the Colorado State Capitol, demanding that Gov. Polis and his fellow politicians enact a gun ban within the state – including for police.

The state Democrats recently voted against a proposal to ban “assault weapons,” which would’ve followed President Biden’s recent plan to do the same. Despite the intense opposition, noting that the single-state ban would have little effect. Nevertheless, that isn’t stopping Here 4 The Kids to try and get something done.

“I want to believe that Polis wants to do the right thing. But also, growing up in this country, I know how powerful the people behind weapons are and how powerful the NRA is,” one of the members, Lindsey Long, noted in a statement to CPR.org.

But it goes beyond what one specific group says, and really comes down to a better way of containing the violence, rather than calling for an all-out ban of the weapons. Joining us now to discuss this further is a member of the Second Amendment Foundation, a group that firmly believes in everyone’s right to bear arms.

Q&A:

  1. What do you think is the big thing that is preventing Gov. Polis from making any sort of traction on an “assault rifle” ban? The Second Amendment? Or the backlash that could come from gun owners?
  2. Why do you believe that a gun ban isn’t the answer? Wouldn’t people still be able to get their hands on firearms if they wanted them anyway, especially with online availability?
  3. You’ve noted in the past how effective you believe Concealed-Carry citizens would be when going against those in “active shooter” events. Why do you believe this is a safer solution compared to, say, an all-out ban?
  4. Do you believe this will prompt President Biden to try and continue to make traction on his hopes to ban “assault weapons” in the U.S.? Do you believe he’ll make any sort of progress, especially with so many Republicans dead-set against it?
  5. Why do you believe Biden – or other politicians for that matter – don’t believe that Concealed-Carry would be an effective solution? More “guns on the street,” as it were?
  6. Where can we learn more about the Second Amendment Foundation and what it can do for its members?
