China May Be Fishing For Trouble With Collisions With the Philippines

The Epoch Times’ investigative reporter Nan Su explains why there could be trouble brewing in the South China Sea.

China doesn’t appear to be doing the Philippines any favors as of late.

According to this report from Fox News, Philippines authorities have blamed China for creating “collisions” with other boats in a disputed area of the South China Sea – which, surprisingly enough, the latter has absolutely no claim to.

The authorities noted that, this past weekend, a Chinese Coast Guard ship performed “dangerous blocking maneuvers” that resulted in a collision with a Philippine vessel bringing supplies to troops in Ayungin Shoal. Officials called the move “provocative, irresponsible and illegal,” and noting all sorts of safety problems.

If that wasn’t enough, a second incident also took place, where a Chinese militia vessel striking a Philippine Coast Guard ship, carrying out a similar supply mission. A spokesman noted, “China as a major power bears a heavier responsibility of contributing to peace and stability in the region.”

The Chinese Coast Guard has struck back, noting that the Philippines has broken international marine law – even though it’s China itself in violation of an international tribunal that was passed way back in 2016.

China officials noted that the Guard vessel “purposely provoked trouble and reversed course,” even though no official evidence was presented. As for the first incident, it noted it was in “accordance with the law.” But the question is who’s law.

Joining us now to discuss the situation further is Nan Su, a senior investigative reporter for The Epoch Times. Nan is an expert in all things China, so his knowledge will certainly provide weight to this matter.

Q&A:

  1. Does it sound like China’s trying to gain dominance of the South China Sea, even though it has no official right in doing so?
  2. Is this a move on Xi Jinping’s part, in an effort to show China’s dominance? Or is there something else at play here?
  3. It appears that an international tribunal in The Hague originally ruled in favor of the Philippines over a maritime dispute, which Beijing seems to be flat-out ignoring. Are they just not pleased with the ruling, or is it something else?
  4. With all the finger pointing, do you believe that China simply doesn’t want to take blame in the matter?
  5. What will likely happen if these collisions or “bumps” continue to take place? Could it get to the point that actual military action could take place?
  6. Speaking of uneasiness with China, you recently contributed to a new Epoch Times documentary called The Final WarTell us more about it and why it’s such a compelling subject with everything that’s happening right now.
  7. Where can we learn more about you and see your work over on The Epoch Times?
