China Looks To Lighten Up On Visas For Foreign Travelers – But a New COVID Problem Could Be Waiting

The Epoch Times’ Nan Su discusses the latest problem with China, just as it’s looking to loosen its visa rules for international travelers.

China is looking to push tourism back into its circle with loosened visa rules. However, it’s doing so when a COVID epidemic could be breaking out within its borders.

Per this report from Reuters, China is looking to exempt citizens of France, Germany, Netherlands, Spain and Malaysia from requiring visas to visit, in an effort to increase its post-pandemic tourism. It will open a period of approximately one year to do so, starting on December 1st, in an effort to increase its finances with visitors.

However, it might just be doing this at the worst possible time. Another report from NBC Newsindicates that children have been overwhelming hospitals with a number of illnesses, including pneumonia, and respiratory problems. Though not directly related to COVID, it could be playing a part, based on its previous presence within the country.

The World Health Organization did note that though the increase in cases came earlier in the season, they were “not unexpected given the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions, as similarly experienced in other countries.”

Could this growing health issue be a problem when it comes to China’s plans with tourism? Joining us now is Nan Su, a senior investigative reporter for The Epoch Times. His expertise in all things China will certainly be helpful in this matter.

Q&A:

  1. Did China offer these visa-free travel options at the worst possible time? Is there a chance it could’ve waited a little longer after lifting its COVID restrictions?
  2. What do you think the effect will be based on these growing illnesses? Will China see the tourism it’s hoping to see, or will it be less than expected?
  3. What do you think Xi Jinping and his Chinese government need to do to control the ongoing COVID epidemic, if there is anything to be done?
  4. Do you think its situation will get better or worse as 2024 goes on? What kind of financial effect could it have on the country?
  5. Speaking of uneasiness with China, you recently contributed to a new Epoch Times documentary called The Final WarTell us more about it and why it’s such a compelling subject with everything that’s happening right now.
