The Epoch Times’ Nan Su takes a closer look at why China suddenly replaced Qin Gang.
There’s been a lot of questions surrounding the status of China foreign minister Qin Gang, who suddenly disappeared from public view following a meeting that took place in Beijing with the Russian deputy foreign minister late last month. But while those have been answered, new questions have arisen.
Chinese state media has announced that Qin Gang has been removed from his position, replaced by veteran diplomat Wang Yi. Though the authorities didn’t give any explanation surrounding Gang’s replacement, there’s speculation abound.
One interesting theory is that Gang was having an affair with the female host of Hong Kong-based Phoenix TV, and reports indicate that she may have been a spy hired by multiple governments. This has yet to be confirmed, however; and Gang will reportedly keep his title of state councilor, at least for the moment. That said, he has not yet reappeared in public view.
The move is certainly a sudden one, one that, according to NPR, “is a sign of how elite politics continues to operate behind extreme opaqueness even as Beijing’s international clout expands.”
Joining us now to discuss this further is Nan Su, a senior investigative reporter for The Epoch Times. Nan specializes in all things China and its surrounding politics, so his expertise is certainly welcome with this subject.
