CCP: Marxism Over Marketing?

The Chinese Communist Party casts economic growth aside in favor of a more destructive police state.

The Chinese Communist Party has certainly had its fair share of horrendous actions over the past few years. But now it’s making a decision that will change China – and Epoch Times reporters Joshua Philipp and Nan Su believe it’s going to make things much worse.

According to this report from The Epoch Times, the party has opted to make political security and social control a priority over economic growth. This is a huge change in the model that has helped China flourish over the past two decades. And one that could lead to even more tyrannical control.

There’s no question that it has been in the midst of an economic slowdown over the past few years. But to have security considerations overtake market expansion and private-sector development? Yikes.

The CCP already made unsettling decisions with calling for restrictions that have affected private businesses, as well as overseas investment and technology firms. But now it’s leaning more into private policing, and acts indicating a new level of thuggery – adding to an already disastrous reputation for the party under Xi Jinping’s rule.

A retired professor in Anhui Province noted, “All the economic indicators show that they are no longer focused on developing the economy,” he noted. “Instead, they are focused on catching spies and addressing what they call destabilizing factors. In the CCP’s view, politics overrides everything else. Compared with political priorities, economic development has become secondary.”

In other words, police action over growth. Militarization at its very worst.

But now comes the real question. How long before these changes bring even more turmoil to China? Without the necessary investment into technology firms and future development – and instead on the strength of the CCP itself – is there any going back?

Either Joshua Philipp or Nan Su – both senior investigative reporters for the Epoch Times who specialize in discussing the CCP – joins us now to discuss the situation further. We welcome them to the show!

Q&A:

  1. What are your thoughts on the CCP’s shift into security over development? Is this a genuine surprise considering the party’s behavior over the past few years?
  2. Why the change? Does Xi Jinping really believe that the CCP has to be an absolute entity, even at the cost of the growth that China has seen over the past two decades?
  3. China is already on thin ice with a number of countries, including the United States, which it’s infiltrated in the past on several occasions. How much of an effect will this decision have on what little relations remain?
  4. With this choice, what could happen with Taiwan?
  5. Will this increase in security possibly open the door for more infiltration, like the illegal police stations we’ve seen pop up?
  6. With this decision, is there “no going back” for China? Will the CCP’s latest move continue to guide it into a financial downward spiral?
  7. Where can we learn more about you and your work over at The Epoch Times?
