The spokesman for the Gun Owners of America ponders why California was so concerned about purchases in the first place.
California’s latest attempt to try and control the rights of public gun owners has been knocked down by an appeals court.
Per The Epoch Times, the state’s attempt to stop people from buying more than one gun in a thirty-day period has been blocked, with a federal appeals court removing a stay. Though the case could still see an appeal, this is a win for private gun owners.
Initially introduced in 2019 by Gov. Gavin Newsom, the stature also asked firearm dealers to post signs stating, “No person shall make an application to purchase more than one handgun or semiautomatic centerfire rifle within any 30-day period and no delivery shall be made to any person who has made an application to purchase more than one handgun or semiautomatic centerfire rifle within any 30-day period.”
But with its removal, it’s safe to say that the unconstitutional law is dead in the water. At least, for now.
Stephen Willeford, the 2017 “hero with a gun” who serves as the spokesman for the Gun Owners of America, joins us now to discuss this decision – and why it wasn’t necessary in the first place. Sam Parades, another Gun Owners of America spokesman, is also available.
Q&A:
- Why do you think Gov. Newsom was so concerned about how many guns someone could buy over a 30-day period? What do you think the point of his initial law might have been?
- Is controlling the rights for those that purchase guns a poor answer to stopping violent criminal activities? Wouldn’t Constitutional-Carry (or Concealed-Carry) be a much more feasible solution?
- What does the overturning of this law say about the protection of the rights of those that bear arms?
- Do you believe there will be those that will argue about the overturning of this law? For instance, citizens concerned about “more guns being on the streets”, perhaps?
- Could other states follow suit considering how poorly California’s law held up? Or will they find other restrictions to pursue?
- You recently wrote a book called A Town Called Sutherland Springs: Faith and Heroism Through Tragedy, revolving around your 2017 “hero with a gun” situation. Tell us more about how this came together, and why it’s such an important read right now.
