California and NY Lawfare Target Available

Bonta Fide Lawfare: California AG Wages War on Pregnancy Centers for Saving Lives

California AG Rob Bonta seeks $20 Million in fines of pro-life pregnancy centers. Why? Because he says they’re committing fraud, apparently by saving babies’ lives.  Rev. Jim Harden, president and CEO of CompassCare Pregnancy Services, is available to explain why the lawsuit now underway in California, against pro-life pregnancy centers, could set a dangerous national precedent, not just for the pro-life movement, but for free speech, religious liberty, and charitable ministries across America.

That lawsuit served as the basis for New York AG’s Letitia James’ lawsuit against Harden and CompassCare.

  • Congress restored $800 million in taxpayer funding for abortion providers.
  • California seeks $20 million from pro-life pregnancy centers.
  • New York copied California’s legal strategy against CompassCare.
  • Government-funded abortionists prosper while Christian nonprofits face financial ruin.
  • The outcome could reshape free speech and religious liberty nationwide.

On the heels of Congress restoring $800 million in federal taxpayer funding for the abortion industry, one of the nation’s most significant legal battles over the future of the pro-life movement is unfolding in California.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta is seeking nearly $20 million in penalties against Heartbeat International and RealOptions Pregnancy Medical Clinics, accusing them of fraud for providing women information about Abortion Pill Reversal after they regret taking the first abortion drug. Harden argues the real objective is not consumer protection, but the financial destruction of Christian ministries that offer women an alternative to abortion. If successful, the lawsuit could become a blueprint for silencing pro-life organizations through relentless government litigation rather than legislative debate.

That blueprint has already crossed state lines. Just five days after CompassCare filed suit against New York Attorney General Letitia James in 2024, James filed her own lawsuit against CompassCare using legal theories remarkably similar to those now being tested in California. Harden contends the coordinated strategy is intended to bury pregnancy centers under years of litigation, crippling legal costs, and existential financial penalties until they can no longer serve women in crisis.

The irony, Harden notes, is impossible to ignore. Since the Supreme Court returned abortion policy to the states in Dobbs, abortion numbers have risen nationally, yet abortion advocates continue claiming access is under siege. At the very moment government is restoring hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars to the abortion industry, privately funded pregnancy centers that provide free ultrasounds, medical care, parenting resources, and practical support are being prosecuted as though helping women choose life is itself unlawful.

Harden can discuss why these lawsuits represent an unprecedented escalation in the campaign against pro-life ministries, why California’s courtroom battle could shape similar cases nationwide, and what happens if state attorneys general are permitted to redefine protected speech as consumer fraud whenever they disagree with the message.

OPTIONAL Q&A:

  1. Why are taxpayers being forced to subsidize the abortion industry with $800 million while pro-life charities are being sued into financial ruin?
  2. Is California really claiming that helping women reverse a chemical abortion they regret constitutes consumer fraud?
  3. Why did New York Attorney General Letitia James file suit against CompassCare just five days after CompassCare sued her?
  4. Are California and New York coordinating a legal strategy to silence Christian pregnancy centers through lawsuits rather than legislation?
  5. Why are nonprofit pregnancy centers that provide free medical care, ultrasounds, parenting support, and baby supplies facing multi-million-dollar penalties while abortion providers receive federal funding?
  6. If attorneys general can label pro-life speech as fraud today, what religious or charitable speech could be targeted tomorrow?
  7. What would a California victory mean for pregnancy centers, churches, and faith-based nonprofits across the country?
  8. Is this really about consumer protection—or is it about eliminating pro-life ministries that compete with the abortion industry’s narrative?
