Buffalo’s Mass Shooting Suspect Utilized Body Armor, and It’s a Disturbing Trend Growing In Other Shootings Too (Guest: Michael Letts)

Last week’s mass shooting in a Buffalo supermarket, which left ten dead and several others injured, has left a lot of questions in its wake. But one big one remains – how was an 18-year old suspect not only able to get his hands on an illegally modified rifle, but also body armor?

Details about the shooting indicate that the suspect was seen wearing body armor to protect himself while opening fire within the store – and he’s not the only one. Other mass shootings, such as the Colorado theater shooting in 2012 and a Texas mass shooting in 2007, also had suspects wearing some form of protective gear.

It leads many to wonder how young, disturbed criminals such as this are able to get their hands on such gear – and how President Joe Biden’s reported gun ban won’t have much effect on how they may continue to do so.

Speaking with us on the matter today is Michael Letts, who serves as president and co-founder of InVest USA, an organization that provides bulletproof vests to police officers across the country through various sponsorships and charitable programs.

Q&A

  1. We’re starting to see more and more heavily armed shooters that are finding some sort of body armor to protect themselves. Is it really that easy to access on the open market? Or does it need to be specialty ordered?
  2. Some believe that Joe Biden’s attempts to “ban” this gear could slow the shootings, but wouldn’t criminals just find a way to still get their hands on it?
  3. Is there any way that officers can prepare themselves for suspects that may be wearing body armor? Would they require some sort of armor-piercing rounds to deal with ones that won’t willingly stop?
  4. What’s the key to protecting officers that are going up against criminals that are prepared for such a “do-or-die” scenario? Is a bulletproof vest even enough these days?
  5. What do you think the key is to stopping mass shootings such as this? We know you’ve talked about supporting open carry in the past, but what if someone tries to confront a suspect wearing body armor?
  6. Where can we learn more about In-Vest USA?
