A Bear Attack In a Wisconsin Couple’s Home Speaks Clearly About Why More People Should Have Guns For Safety (Guest: Stephen Willeford)

A couple living in Wisconsin got the scare of their lives over the weekend when a bear attacked them inside their home over the weekend. Fortunately, they were able to hold off its advances and protect their children, killing it with a gun before more damage could be done.

The bear was seen digging inside the couple’s bird feeder outside. When they yelled at it to “go away,” it instead charged through their home, attacking both the husband and wife. They were able to hold it off with a kitchen knife before gaining access to a firearm and killing the animal.

Some believe that this story speaks volumes when it comes to more people having firearms for the sake of safety, bringing more weight to the argument about potential open-carry being allowed in more cities.

Speaking with us about this situation now is Stephen Willeford. Stephen serves as advisor to the Second Amendment Foundation, as well as a spokesman for Gun Owners of America. You may recall in 2017 how he stopped the Sutherland Springs, Texas mass shooting, acting as the “good guy with a gun.” His expertise is certainly welcome in this matter.

Q&A

  1. We can’t imagine what would’ve happened if the couple didn’t have a firearm to protect themselves in their home. Is this just one of the situations you’d bring up in regards to recommending having one?
  2. It sounds like they may have inadvertently gotten the bear’s attention by yelling at it. What would you have done in the situation?
  3. There’s been a lot of talk lately about cities approving open-carry laws, especially with the rise in mass shooting events. Do you think it should just be approved nationwide?
  4. When someone’s considering buying a weapon and wants to know the best one to “start” with (if they’re new to them), what kind of recommendation would you give?
  5. Speaking from personal experience, where’s the best place to store a firearm for safe keeping? We know keeping it out of reach of children is recommended, but in an emergency, how close do you want to keep it?
  6. Where can we learn more about you, as well as the Gun Owners of America?

Stephen represents the Gun Owners of America and is known around the country as the “good guy with the gun” for helping stop the largest Texas mass shooting in the history of the state in 2017. He is available to speak about all 2nd Amendment issues, as well as the importance of the Gun Owners of America. You can read more about him at http://www.stephenwilleford.com.
