Boston Tightens Its Gun Laws In the Hopes of De-Escalating Violence – But It Likely Won’t Work

A Second Amendment Foundation representative explains why the prohibitive gun bill could bring even more trouble to the city.

With criminal activity heightening in the city of Boston, the Massachusetts House just approved a bill that takes aim at firearm laws, namely with tracking down unregistered “ghost guns.”

The bill also tightens possession of “assault weapons,” and requires key gun components to be serialized and registered with the state. In addition, individuals would not be able to carry a gun into another person’s house without permission.

In addition, the bill also prevents the modification of firearms into an illegal automatic weapon, as well as prohibiting carrying weapons in locations like schools and government buildings.

Originally introduced by Democratic House Speaker Ronald Mariano, the bill is in contrast to a Supreme Court ruling last year, which enables people to carry firearms for the sake of self-defense.

Though officials believe it will make an impact on the growing violence within the city, that doesn’t appear to be the case. Not to mention it runs right against the Second Amendment, which, like the Supreme Court ruled, allows everyone the right to bear arms.

A representative from the Second Amendment Foundation joins us now to discuss the matter further.

Q&A:

  1. What do you think is the most disturbing aspect of the bill passed by the Massachusetts House?
  2. Does creating a preventive gun bill such as this really hold the key to calming the violence within the city of Boston? Or will it just get worse?
  3. What’s the biggest problem with proposed gun bills such as these? Going up against the Supreme Court’s ruling for everyone to have the right to bear arms? Or something else?
  4. Do you think this bill will likely be overturned? Could legal action take place?
  5. What do you think is the proper solution for the growing violence within the city of Boston? Concealed-carry permits? Or something else?
  6. Where can we learn more about the Second Amendment Foundation and its members?
