As Hurricane Ian Approaches, Consideration For National Constitutional Carry May Be Needed (Guest: Second Amendment)

The forthcoming weather event in Florida could present a need for protection from looters and criminals.

Second Amendment’s Lee Williams recently wrote about the need for national Constitutional Carry with Hurricane Ian set to approach Florida within a matter of hours. But there’s a reason for this, he explains.

“Today’s criminals look at hurricane evacuees about the same way Caribbean pirates salivated over fat Spanish merchant ships heavily laden with gold,” he explained. “At the very least, hurricane evacuees have a car full of gas, hundreds of dollars in cash, prescription drugs, food, water and valuables too precious to leave at home.”

He noted how then-Governor Rick Scott saw this and signed “Hurricane Gun Law” into effect, allowing citizens to carry a concealed firearm for 48 hours while dealing with evacuation orders issued from weather events, such as a hurricane. This is, of course, after the governor calls for a state of emergency and with mandatory evacuation in certain areas.

That said, other states haven’t quite learned from Florida’s example, and don’t have a Constitutional Carry rule in place for when a situation such as a hurricane or another weather event arises. Joining us now is a representative from Second Amendment Foundation, to tell us why it’s necessary to have this in place, especially as weather conditions worsen over the second half of 2022.

Q&A:

  1. Why do you think people take advantage of weather events, using it as an opportunity to loot families and others? Do they just see it as a “golden opportunity” to make money off of someone else’s misfortune?
  2. How effective do you believe the “Hurricane Gun Law” has been since its instatement in 2015?
  3. Why do you think other states haven’t adapted their own “Hurricane Gun Law”? Are they more concerned with the potential violence that could stem from it, despite what’s happening with rising criminal rates across the U.S.?
  4. Do you believe the government should have its own weather condition laws put in place? Or would that be asking too much of this current administration?
  5. You’ve often stated how effective Constitutional Carry can be these days, especially in the face of active shooter events. Why do you think it works so much better than President Biden’s proposed gun bans?
  6. When it comes to having a firearm in the case of an emergency evacuation in an effort to keep you and your family safe, what’s the best suggestion you can make to citizens?
  7. Where can we learn more about the Second Amendment Foundation and its members?
